Report: Pop star arrested in UK abuse case

British police arrested convicted sex offender and former pop star Gary Glitter on Sunday as part of an investigation into allegations of child sex abuse by the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, media said.

Glitter was released on bail some 10 hours later. But the arrest - the first to be reported in the case - widened a scandal that has already damaged the reputation of the publicly-funded BBC and the legacy of Savile, a former DJ who was one of the broadcaster's top show hosts and a prolific charity fundraiser.

The head of the BBC's governing body said on Sunday the broadcaster's reputation was on the line, and promised to get to the bottom of the scandal.

'A steep fall' for BBC as child sex abuse scandal rocks UK

A police statement said a man in his 60s had been picked up just after 7 am (0700 GMT) on suspicion of sexual offenses in the investigation termed "Savile and others." The statement did not name the man and a spokesman declined further comment.

The BBC and Sky News identified the man picked up from his London home as Glitter, a 68-year-old who was popular as a glam-rock singer in the 1970s.

Footage on both broadcasters showed Glitter, who was wearing a hat and sunglasses and was not handcuffed, leaving an apartment in central London and being driven away. Hours later, television showed investigators carrying large black bags as they left the house.

Glitter was held by police for about 10 hours. He was seen leaving a police station in central London and, minutes later, return to his apartment, where he dodged questions by scores of waiting reporters and cameramen.

Police later said the man was "bailed to return to the police station in mid-December 2012, pending further inquiries."

Jimmy Savile abuse scandal stuns Britain: a who's who primer

Glitter, born Paul Gadd, shot to fame in the early 1970s with the hit "Rock and Roll," trademark figure-hugging shiny silver all-in-one suits, platform shoes and large black hair.

Glitter served two months was jail in Britain in 1999 for possession of child pornography. He then moved to Cambodia, but was deported in 2002 due to suspected sex offences.

In 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him of committing obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11 and sentenced him to four years in jail. On his release he returned to Britain.

Allegations that Savile sexually abused young girls for decades first emerged in an expose on the British TV channel ITV. Since then, police say some 300 victims had come forward.

Victims' allegations broadcast by ITV include claims from one woman that she had seen Glitter having sex with an underage girl in Savile's BBC dressing room while Savile abused another girl. Glitter has denied the claim, according to the BBC.

With the scandal widening, public outrage has increased. A cottage in the Scottish Highlands that belonged to Savile was vandalized overnight, with abusive slogans painted on its walls, local police said.

Blind eye?
The scandal has raised troubling questions about the BBC's management and its past workplace culture. Revelations that an investigation by Newsnight, the BBC's flagship TV news show, was shelved last December led to claims bosses at the broadcaster knew about the allegations but kept quiet.

"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality?" asked Chris Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust which oversees the broadcaster, writing in the Mail on Sunday.

The Sunday Times said the office of former BBC director Mark Thompson was alerted about the allegations twice, in May and September. Thompson is poised to take over as chief executive of the New York Times, and the Sunday Times quoted his spokesman as saying Thompson had not been told about the allegations on either occasion.

Thompson has told Reuters that he did not know about the nature of the investigation by the Newsnight program into Savile, and had no involvement in the decision to axe the report.

The BBC said on its website on Sunday that "Thompson has said the first time he had been made aware of claims that Savile had committed serious crimes and that some had taken place while the entertainer was working at the BBC was after he stepped down as director general."

The broadcaster has announced two investigations as a result of the scandal, and Patten promised full cooperation.

"The BBC's reputation is on the line," he wrote. "The BBC must tell the truth and face up to the truth about itself, however terrible."

When Savile died in October last year aged 84, his gold coffin went on public display and he was lauded as a "national treasure" who had raised millions of pounds for good causes.

A year later, police describe him as "undoubtedly" one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, and the Vatican said a papal knighthood given to Savile decades ago for his charity work "should not have been bestowed".

Savile's family said it was in despair over the allegations and offered its "deepest sympathy" to abuse victims. It also said it had decided to remove the headstone on Savile's grave and destroy it to avoid it becoming a target for vandals.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling on Sunday rejected a call by the deputy leader of the opposition Labour party for an independent, over-arching inquiry, arguing that such a process risked taking much longer to get to the truth.

Grayling told the BBC that efforts should focus on finding anyone involved in abuse alongside Savile and bringing them to justice.

Spain unemployment hits record high at 25 percent

MADRID (Reuters) - One in four Spanish workers were without a job in the third quarter of this year, a record high, and further layoffs are likely to follow next year as more of the country's 60 billion euro program of budget austerity kicks in.

The official numbers follow labor unions call for a general strike for November 14, part of growing protests over cutbacks that many believe have done little to combat the crisis and only served to put more people out of work.

Data from the National Statistics Institute showed the unemployment rate rose to 25.0 percent in the three months from July-September, a level unseen since the Francisco Franco dictatorship ended in the mid-1970s.

That was up from 24.6 percent in the previous quarter, and just below the 25.1 percent consensus forecast. The number of workers without a job stood at 5.8 million.

Only Greece has higher unemployment in the European Union and the data puts further pressure on the government as it battles to control a public deficit to meet Brussels' demands in a recession that shows no sign of letting up.

Spain's financing needs are largely covered for this year, and its cost of borrowing from bond markets has eased significantly since August thanks to the European Central Bank's promise to buy the country's bonds should it call for help.

Yet austerity measures, worth over 60 billion euros by 2014, are likely to crimp growth further, and cast more workers out of a job.

"There is a debate over the optimistic growth outlook for next year by the government, which is given little credibility. Weaker growth than expected, coupled with austerity, could easily see unemployment hit 26 percent next year," said Silvio Peruzzo, economist at Nomura in London.

Government forecasts show the economy contracting next year by 0.5 percent, while a Reuters poll this week showed it shrinking three times that much.

The government expects the economy to shrink 1.5 percent this year, while the official outlook is for the unemployment rate not to fall below 24 percent until 2014.

The economy slipped back into recession at the end of last year. The government says 2013 will be the final year of recession for Spain, a view shared by the euro zone's largest bank Santander.

(AP) ? Apple's stock fell below $600 on Friday for the first time in three months, after the consumer electronics behemoth warned that costs of making new products will cut into profits in the holiday quarter.

Apple's earnings for the latest quarter also missed expectations.

Apple shares were down $11.26, or 1.9 percent, to $598.28 in afternoon trading.

Late Thursday, Apple said profits for the rest of the year would fall from last year because it's launching so many new products. It's expecting mammoth sales, but new products are more expensive to make than older ones.

Apple launched the iPhone 5 a month ago and announced two new iPads and three new Macs this week. In addition, it's shipping new iPods.

Wall Street analysts took the adjustment in stride, knowing that Apple nearly always lowballs its estimates, but several cut their earnings estimates for the fiscal year that started this month. Stuart Jeffrey noted that Apple's profit margins should be back to normal in the quarter that starts in April, but that will be too late to fully make up for the earnings hit in the holiday quarter. He cut his earnings estimate for the year by 10 percent and his price target on the shares from $710 to $660.

Apple shares have now lost more than $100 from their all-time peak of $705.07, hit on Sept. 21, the day the iPhone went on sale in the U.S. and eight other countries. That's a total loss to investors of $106 billion. Apple remains the most valuable public company in the world, by a wide margin, with a total market capitalization of $556 billion.

Apple's stock last fell below $600 following an earnings report as well. It missed expectations in the previous quarter, too, something rare for Apple.

The Cupertino, Calif., company started taking orders for the iPad Mini on Friday. The new, smaller version of the iPad tablet starts at $329. Initial shipments of the white model quickly sold out on Apple's site; buyers will now have to wait two weeks for delivery. The black model was still available Friday afternoon for a one-week delivery.

(AP) ? The NFL fined the Baltimore Ravens $20,000 Friday for not listing safety Ed Reed on the team's injury report.

Reed publicly acknowledged his right shoulder injury Oct. 17, a few days before the Ravens played Houston and said it could be affecting his play. The Pro Bowl safety played during practices and games after the injury occurred.

The league he should have been listed on the injury report with a shoulder injury and was fully participating in practice.

The NFL's policy on injury reports states that players with "significant or noteworthy injuries must be listed on the report, even if the player takes all the reps in practice." The rule covers players the team is certain will play in upcoming games.

Reed has played in every game this season. He has 30 tackles, two interceptions ? including a 34-yard return for a touchdown ? and seven passes defensed.

Washington and Buffalo were fined $20,000 each for similar infractions last week.

The Redskins were fined for not properly updating media on quarterback Robert Griffin III's status during a game against Atlanta on Oct. 7. He left with a head injury that turned out to be a mild concussion.

The Bills failed to list defensive end Mario Williams on the injury report while he was being treated for a sprained left wrist. Williams said on Oct. 3 that the wrist had been bothering him for weeks and limiting his play.

Three Cheap Stocks With Short-Squeeze Potential | Stocks ...

Heavily shorted, outperforming stocks are intriguing from a contrarian perspective, and the bargain hunters among us can appreciate a cheap price tag as well. Fitting the bill on all three fronts are TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO), iStar Financial Inc. (NYSE:SFI), and McEwen Mining Inc (NYSE:MUX).

Our weekly Singles Only screen (with data assistance from Finviz.com), found these three stocks and 24 more that could extend their year-to-date gains via short-covering activity.

After rising 27% off its mid-July nadir, TIVO shares are bobbing around double-digit territory for the first time in almost six months. During the past three months, the shares have outperformed the broader S&P 500 Index (INDEXSP:.INX) -- on a relative-strength basis -- by 13 percentage points.

Short sellers, however, remain skeptical of the video-recording pioneer. About 10% of the stock's float is sold short, and it would take close to a week to cover all of the existing shorted shares. Short sellers may have already begun to pack it in, however, as the number of TIVO shares sold short pulled back almost 5% in the last reporting period.

SFI has reached a new annual high of $9.09 today, ahead of its third-quarter earnings release tomorrow morning. While recent results have been mixed -- two positive and two negative surprises -- the stock has momentum on its side. SFI has trounced the SPX by 21 percentage points in the last two months (in terms of relative strength) and is up more than 65% in 2012.

Close to 20% of the stock's float is currently sold short, resulting in a short-interest ratio of 19.5. In other words, it would take almost 20 sessions (roughly a month of trading) for the short sellers to exit their positions at the stock's average pace of trading. This is ample fuel for a significant short-covering rally.

Short-term options players are similarly skeptical; the stock's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 4.15 indicates that put open interest more than quadruples call open interest among options expiring in three months or less. This ratio is higher than all but 1% of the past year's worth of ratings.

Meanwhile, the stock is all-but ignored by Wall Street. Just one analyst currently follows the stock, awarding a "strong buy." Further attention from the brokerage crowd could inspire investors currently on the sidelines.

MUX has rallied more than 30% this year despite bearish activity on the part of short sellers and utter apathy on the Street. Currently, almost 13% of the stock's float is sold short, and it would take nearly 12 days for the shorts to exit their positions at the current average daily volume.

On the Street, MUX is ignored by all but one brokerage firm, despite its year-to-date climb and strong outperformance of the SPX -- outpacing the index by nearly 51 percentage points in the last 60 trading days.

Science of Relationships - | - Let's Talk About Sex...During Sex

??Oh yeah, that?s it, right there?

?That feels good?

?Don?t stop?

Moaning, groaning, and words of encouragement during sex enhance your partner?s sexual pleasure and a recent study suggests that talking during sex is also linked to your own satisfaction.1 People who communicate their likes and dislikes to their partners during sex are more sexually satisfied.

Talking about your sexual needs and desires is not always easy; many people feel that having sex is easier than talking about sex.2 But, based on findings from a recent survey of 207 sexually active men and women, less apprehension about sexual communication is linked to higher sexual satisfaction. People who were more confident in their sexual skills and less anxious about talking to their partners about sex communicated more openly about what they find pleasurable during sex. As a result, they were more sexually satisfied. Admittedly, many people may have trouble telling sexual partners what they like and dislike during sex. Fortunately, using non-verbal cues works as well. Moaning, body movements, and facial expressions that indicate pleasure can direct a partner to doing more of the things you find sexually enjoyable. Indeed, according to this survey, both telling your partner what turns you on and demonstrating it non-verbally are linked to higher sexual satisfaction.1

So it?s not only important to share your sexual needs and desires with a partner outside of the bedroom,3 but it is also important to do so right in the heat of the moment. The researchers found that even a small amount of anxiety can influence the degree to which you communicate pleasure with your partner during sex,1 and improving these communication skills may have positive results for your sex life. Years ago, in a workshop at Good For Her in Toronto, I learned a technique for practicing sexual communication. First, have your partner take your hand and move their finger in a circular direction around your palm. Then, tell them one thing you like and want them to keep doing (I like the pressure) and one thing you want them to do differently (I would like you to go slower). Now use this same technique during a sexual encounter and see if it enhances your sexual pleasure. After all, if you want your partner to be GGG, you first have to communicate your sexual needs.

Futuristic highway glows in the dark, reports the weather

18 hrs.

Road trips in the not-too-distant future will take on a psychedelic hue with glow-in-dark lane markers that eliminate the need for overhead lighting and dynamic paint that brightens when the temperature drops below freezing and icy conditions prevail.

The glow-in-the-dark roads are treated with a special ?foto-luminising powder? that is charged up during the day and illuminates the contours of the road and lane markers at night for up to 10 hours, according to Dutch designer and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure.?

Dynamic paint responds to changes in temperature. A pattern of snowflakes, for example, appears when it is cold and slippery. The concept should help drivers take note of changing weather conditions as they head over a mountain pass.

The glow-in-the-dark road and dynamic paint concepts will be realized next year in the Netherlands. Other innovations to debut in the coming years include an induction priority lane that will charge electric cars as they drive, presumably via induction coils that are powered by wind.

Now, put robot in charge of the driving and the future will be now.

Obama pressures Romney to break his Mourdock ties

CINCINNATI (AP) ? President Barack Obama, seeking to shore up support among women, intensified his pressure Thursday on Mitt Romney to break any ties with a Republican Senate candidate who said that if a woman becomes pregnant from rape it is "something God intended." Romney ignored the emotional social issue, holding to an optimistic campaign tone as he fought for victory in crucial Ohio.

Obama, wrapping up a 40-hour battleground state blitz, also headed to his hometown of Chicago and cast his ballot 12 days before Election Day. The stopover was more than a photo opportunity ? it was a high-profile attempt to boost turnout in early voting, a centerpiece of Obama's strategy.

The 2012 presidential contest was expected to cross the $2 billion fundraising mark Thursday, putting the election on track to be the costliest in history. It's being fueled by a campaign finance system vastly altered by the proliferation of "super" political action committees that are bankrolling TV ads in closely contested states.

Back on the campaign trail, the president made repeated, though indirect, references to Indiana Republican Richard Mourdock's controversial comment on rape and pregnancy.

"We've seen again this week, I don't think any male politicians should be making health care decisions for women," Obama told a crowd of about 15,000 on an unseasonably warm fall day in Richmond, Va. The president's aides pressed further, using a web video to highlight Romney's endorsement of Mourdock and to accuse the GOP nominee of kowtowing to his party's extreme elements.

Romney, who appears in a television advertisement declaring his support for Mourdock, brushed aside questions on the matter from reporters throughout the day. He centered his efforts instead on turning his campaign's claims of momentum into a more practical ? and ultimately necessary ? roadmap to winning the required 270 Electoral College votes. Ohio is crucial to that effort.

"This election is not about me," Romney told 3,000 people at a southern Ohio manufacturing company. "It's not about the Republican Party. It's about America. And it's about your family." To an estimated 12,000 people at a high school football stadium in Defiance, Ohio, the Republican declared Thursday night: "We have a big election, and we want a president who will actually bring big changes. And I will and he won't."

Romney has disavowed Mourdock's comments, but his campaign says he continues to support the Indiana Republican's Senate candidacy.

Less than two weeks from Election Day, both candidates feverishly campaigned across the country in an exceedingly close race.

Opinion polls show Obama and Romney tied nationally. A new Associated Press-GfK poll of likely voters had Romney up 47 percent to 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error. But the race will really be decided by nine or so competitive states: Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada and Colorado.

The urgent task for both campaigns is to cobble together wins in enough states to cross the 270 threshold.

Obama advisers have identified at least three viable options. Winning Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin would put him over the top, as would winning Ohio, Iowa and Nevada. A five-state combination of Iowa, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Nevada and Colorado would also seal the deal for the president's re-election.

Romney's team has yet to publicly outline any specific pathways to 270. Without a win in Ohio, however, the Republican nominee would have to sweep every other competitive state.

That reality was the motivation behind Romney's daylong swing through three Ohio cities Thursday. Obama finished his day in Ohio, too, with a 12,000-person rally on an airport tarmac ? the final stop on his marathon, two-day drive for votes.

"Even though I've been going for about 38 hours straight, even though my voice is getting kind of hoarse, I've still got a spring in my step because our course is right, because we're fighting for the future. I've come to Ohio today to ask you for your vote," said Obama, speaking against the backdrop of Cleveland's skyline and Air Force One.

An upbeat Romney proclaimed his campaign had the momentum heading into Election Day. But there were signs in Ohio, as well as Virginia, that his surge following the first debate might have run its course.

In Ohio, internal Republican and Democratic campaign polls this week showed Obama with a lead, just outside the margin of sampling error.

The race in Virginia remains close. Romney has established a slim lead, but the shift toward him seen during the three weeks of debates has slowed or stopped, internal polls from both parties showed.

Romney is hoping to boost his electoral prospects in part by cutting into Obama's long-standing advantage with women. The AP-GfK poll suggested that effort was bearing fruit, with Romney erasing the president's 16-point advantage among female likely voters.

Obama advisers insist they've lost no ground with women. But their eagerness to highlight Romney's connections to Mourdock indicated some degree of nervousness within the campaign.

Romney's campaign reached out to female voters Thursday by sending Ann Romney on daytime's "Rachael Ray" show, where she prepared her meatloaf cakes recipe and took cameras along on a trip to Costco to shop in bulk for family gatherings. Mrs. Romney said that, with 30 mouths to feed, her family always eats buffet-style and that "Mitt is often at the front of the line."

The Republican presidential nominee also faced fresh scrutiny of his business record Thursday following the release of newly unsealed testimony related to Staples founder Tom Sternberg's divorce. Documents show Romney said he was initially skeptical of the idea for Staples, the office supply chain he lauds as a business success story that he helped create.

Romney also acknowledged in testimony in Massachusetts probate court in 1991 that he and other Staples directors created a special class of company stock for Stemberg's then-wife as a "favor" to Stemberg, who was a speaker at the August Republican convention. Throughout the campaign, Romney has described Staples as a "great American success story" and took credit for its growth to a mega-firm employing nearly 90,000 workers.

Robert Jones, an attorney for Romney, rejected the notion that Romney undervalued Staples stock to help Stemberg.

While the campaigns speed ahead, about 7.2 million people already have cast early ballots, either by mail or in person, according to the United States Elections Project at George Mason University. In all, about 35 percent of the electorate is expected to vote before Election Day. That would be a small increase over 2008.

"I'm told I'll be the first sitting president to take advantage of early voting," Obama said in an email to supporters, urging them to cast their votes before Nov. 6.

As the campaign enters its final days, both sides are focused on winning the increasingly narrow sliver of undecided voters. Obama made a personal appeal to late-deciding voters Wednesday in a conference call from Air Force One. His campaign is also mailing undecided voters copies of a new 20-page booklet featuring Obama's second-term agenda, a collection of policies that have been previously introduced.

The president's campaign also trumpeted the endorsement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican who supported Obama in 2008. Powell praised Obama's handling of the economic recovery, telling "CBS This Morning," ''I think we've begun to come out of the dive and we're gaining altitude."

Elsewhere Thursday, GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan showered attention on Virginia, telling voters in Appalachian coal country that winning a close race won't be enough for the GOP ticket.

"The worst thing that could happen is President Obama gets re-elected and we have more of the same with a debt crisis," Ryan said. "The second worst thing that could happen is we get elected by default, without a mandate."

Vice President Joe Biden took time off the campaign trail to attend a prayer service for former Democratic Sen. George McGovern.
