Undoubtedly Starbucks is one of the best marketing stories of recent times. How this company turned a simple beverage into a symbol of sophistication is no mystery. It is all about this thing called positioning.
We have always liked our coffee hot. But Starbucks made coffee cool, appealing, trendy and very profitable. The company started out in 1971 with one single coffee shop, by 1995 the chain?s earnings were over $26 million. Marketing experts agree that Starbucks? climb to fortune had a lot to do with the public?s perception of its style. Meaning it wasn?t about the product but more about the environment and experience that attracted coffee drinkers.
Starbucks teaches us a couple of strong marketing principles. Both will help us better understand effective positioning:
1. People buy things for their own reasons not anyone else?s.
2. The stronger position is found in the benefit, experience, or outcome instead of the methods that produces the outcome.
It?s not about the packaging, it?s about the positioning. Starbucks creates an environment that invites us to study, socialize with friends, or start your day with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. Starbucks is an invitation to hangout, not just grab your coffee and go.
So when you are looking at your own position in this industry and want to improve your image therefore improving your market share, you have to take these four winning positions into consideration: different, better, faster and cheaper. Starbucks chose different which in turn made them better.
Here?s a guideline of questions you need to ask yourself to figure out what position you can gain in our industry:
? Who is my specific target market? Who are my premium clients?
? What are my client?s unique challenges, needs, desires?
? What do I provide in a unique way to help my clients achieve there goals?
? How can I position myself as an expert in this market?
Now you can tailor all of your marketing efforts, what you say to people, your website, even the way you dress and act to help establish your position.
If you want to skyrocket your success, you have to clearly define yourself and differentiate your game from the masses. Who are you? Who are you not? Have an exact clarity of what you want your home based business to look like and who within the industry you want to help: newbies, existing marketers, part-timers, those who hate calling leads, online marketers, offline marketers, etc. Think these questions over and choose your position and run with it! Look around, those who are different and target a specific crowd are the ones we follow and want to team up with right?
I hope this was helpful and gives you a little insight on your own business and how to improve it. If you like this blog, do me a favor and share it!
