The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is, in essence, to close all its offices across North America.
If every single employee was out of a job at the LLSC, we would all be happy ?because that means we would have found a cure for blood cancers.
Until that point, we rely on smaller milestones to help continue to give us hope and keep striving to fund innovative ?research, that will lead to that goal.
The latest statistics?on blood cancers in Canada were recently released, and although they do not represent a 100% cure, they do represent great strides -?and this is thanks to our generous participants, sponsors, donors and volunteers who have supported the LLSC and it?s researchers throughout the years.
- The number of new cases ?of blood cancers last year were 15,920 ? or a person diagnosed every 33 minutes.
- Deaths from blood cancers in Canada have decreased from 7,293 ?to ?6,900, in one year ? or a person every 76 minutes.? The mortality rate is improving? due to improved treatments, funded in part by the LLSC (Gleevec for CML, Rituxan for NHL) and earlier, accurate diagnosis due to improved diagnostic tools.
- Leukemia & lymphoma account for 43% of childhood cancers. Kids diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) or Hodgkin?s Lymphoma (HL) have the best chance of long-term survival (89% and 94% respectively).? However we still lose 1 in 5 kids to their blood cancer.
- Blood cancers as a group are 4th most common cancers in males, after prostate, lung & colorectal, and the 4th most common in women after breast, lung & colorectal.
We have come far- but we still ?need your help to change these statistics, and cure blood cancers once and for all.
