Kuwait schedules July 25 parliamentary election

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Kuwait's government has scheduled parliamentary elections on July 25 after a court decision dissolved the chamber over flaws in the balloting law.

Thursday's report by the official Kuwait News Agency sets the stage for a possible new wave of political showdowns between the opposition and the Gulf nation's Western-backed ruling establishment.

Parliamentary elections in December were boycotted by opposition factions claiming new voting rules favored Kuwait's ruling family and were imposed without public debate.

On Sunday, the constitutional court invalidated the 50-seat chamber over technicalities in the election rules. But it upheld the contested regulations for a one-person, one-vote system in place of the former rules that allowed voters to cast ballots for multiple candidates ? which critics say gave too much clout to tribal blocs and others.
