China Green Agriculture Announces the ... - Business News Asia

Released on February 28th, 2012

XI?AN, China, Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia-FirstCall/ ?China Green Agriculture, Inc. (NYSE: CGA) (?CGA? or the ?Company?), a producer and distributor of humic acid based compound fertilizers, blended fertilizers, organic compound fertilizers, slow-release fertilizers, highly-concentrated water-soluble fertilizers and mixed organic-inorganic compound fertilizers and agricultural products, such as top-grade fruits, vegetables, flowers and colored seedlings through its wholly-owned subsidiaries in China, today announced one of the Company?s subsidiaries in China, Xi?an Jintai Agriculture Technology Development Company (?Jintai?) will be relocated to the facilities of one of the Company?s other subsidiaries, Xi?an Hu County Yuxing Agriculture Technology Development Co., Ltd. (?Yuxing?) located in Hu County, Xi?an. Yuxing?s facilities are approximately a one hour drive south of Jintai?s current location in the Economic and Technical Development Zone (the ?Zone?) in the metro area of the city of Xi?an. Jintai and Yuxing will continue to serve as the research and development bases of the Company?s fertilizer products business. The relocation will commence on March 1, 2012 and the Company expects the relocation will be completed by the end of May 2012.

As mentioned in the Company?s previous quarterly reports, with the rapid growth of urbanization in Xi?an, the Zone has been inhabited by a large and dense population and the periphery of Jintai has bristled with various industrial factories and utility plants. . The Zone?s concentrated industrial activities and dense population changed the micro bioenvironment for the growth of Jintai?s agricultural products and disturbed Jintai?s normal fertilizer research and development. Recently such changes caused the death and obsolescence of large amount of Jintai?s flowers and seedlings. Additionally, the government recently introduced a new rezoning plan for the Zone, and the land Jintai currently occupies is being converted from agriculture use to residential and commercial use. The rezoning will prohibit the agricultural growth activities that Jintai currently conducts at the property. To continue Jintai?s business, the Company will relocate all of Jintai?s operations, including greenhouses, inventories, growing seedlings, flowers and parent plants, to Yuxing.

?The upcoming relocation is our resort to sustain Jintai?s business,? said Mr. Tao Li, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of China Green Agriculture. ?While the relocation will impact Jintai?s business growth temporarily, our normal research and development will not halt, thanks to the growing development of agriculture products in our new fertilizer research and development subsidiary, Yuxing. In the past few months, the board of directors had urged the management team to timely work out a viable relocation solution for Jintai?s other fixed assets to mitigate the disruption from the relocation. In the long run, we believe the consolidation of Yuxing and Jintai?s facilities will centralize the management of fertilizer research and development and decrease expenses by reducing redundancies. While the relocation will affect the segmental performance of Jintai during the relocation period, we expect the performance of our fertilizer subsidiaries will remain strong. We reaffirm our guidance for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012 of net sales between $212.3 million and $228.0 million, net income of $37.9 million to $40.5 million and EPS of $1.41 to $1.51 based on 26.9 million fully diluted weighted average shares outstanding.?

On Oscar weekend, 'Act of Valor' storms box office

(AP) ? On Oscar weekend, the real-life action stars of "Act of Valor" bested Hollywood's pretend heroes.

The Relativity Media action flick, starring real, active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs, topped the weekend box office, earning $24.7 million according to studio estimates Sunday. That was a strong opening for a unique film made in collaboration with the Navy, which sought to demonstrate the skill and bravery of the SEALs without Hollywood imitation.

"How often can you repeat the same heroes that are big stars pretending to be heroes?" said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide distribution for Relativity. "I think moviegoers are ready for a new, fresh experience."

"Act of Valor" led another strong weekend at the box office, as it was up 24.4 percent over the corresponding weekend last year. Attendance this year is up 20.4 percent, a surge that hasn't been driven by Academy Awards contenders but by new films in a traditionally tepid movie-going season.

"The newcomers this year have just been igniting the box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's a very competitive marketplace for both the Oscar contenders and the newcomers."

Lionsgate's "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds," a more dramatic offering for the consistently popular Perry, opened with a healthy $16 million. Its audience was resoundingly female (76 percent) and may have been slightly diminished by the appeal of Denzel Washington in the thriller "Safe House." That earned $11.4 million, bringing its cumulative total to $98.1 million.

The weekend's other new releases ? the thriller "Gone" and the comedy "Wanderlust" ? had weaker debuts. The latter, a comedy with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, earned $6.6 million. "Gone," starring Amanda Seyfried, took in $5 million.

In their third week of release, Sony's romantic drama "The Vow" and Warner Bros.' family film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" padded their totals. "Journey" added $13.5 million for a total of $76.7 million, while" The Vow" added $10 million more for a cumulative $103 million.

The success of "Act of Valor" validated an unusual strategy for Relativity, a production company that began distributing movies in 2010.

Relativity purchased the film, independently produced by the Bandito Brothers, for $13 million. It stoked interest through more than 400 advance screenings and a robust TV ad campaign that included Super Bowl commercials. Its marketing budget was reportedly approximately $30 million.

Though the film garnered poor reviews, audiences gave it an "A," according to CinemaScore. It has resonated with males, who made up 71 percent of the audience.

Internationally, the film, which plays much as patriotic propaganda, may face a stiffer challenge. It will open in foreign markets in future weeks, distributed by Film Nation.

Davies said the film was a "question mark" going into the weekend because of a lack of comparative films, but added that he's "optimistic" about its global prospects.

"In the same way we just didn't know what was going to happen domestically, it's still a bit of a mystery," said Davies. "You would think because it's very much an American story, there won't be the same level of interest. But I think at the end of the day, if a movie delivers on an entertainment quotient, then that's the most important factor."

Ahead of Sunday night's Academy Awards, no Oscar-contender finished in the top 10. Most of the favorites have been playing for weeks, if not months.

The Weinstein Co.'s "The Artist," the silent film ode and best picture favorite, is the only top award nominee still expanding its market. The film, which had a very slow rollout, added 158 theaters this weekend.

In its 14th week, it earned $3 million to bring its total to $31.9 million.

"Not a lot of people have seen it, so there's a lot of room left for 'The Artist' to add box office," said Dergarabedian. "'The Artist' has a lot to gain from (Sunday's) telecast."

Fox Searchlight's Oscar-nominated "The Descendants," in its 15th week, took in $2.2 million, raising its total to $78.5 million. Paramount's "Hugo" added $1.6 million to bring its haul to $69.4 million.

Disney's "The Help" remained, by far, the most popular best picture nominee at the box office, with a total of $169.7 million.

But on its biggest night, Hollywood can celebrate its strong theatrical business after a sluggish end to 2011 spurred much hand-wringing about the future of movie-going.

"It's fantastic," said David Spitz, head of worldwide distribution of Lionsgate. "It seems like it's cyclical, where everyone starts saying, 'Well, admissions are down.' Then all of sudden, (they're up). ... It certainly bodes well for this year."

A Perfect travel guide of Venice City

Venice (Venezia) really needs no introduction. Venice, a unique city of 116 islands, ancient history and endless waterways; it attracts a steady stream of tourists from all corners of the world to view its inspiring architecture and to navigate its mystical canals.

Floating on its blue lagoon with an almost dream-like quality, Venice is just as romantic and beautiful as it looks on the travelogues and movies, so no-one who realizes their ambition of a holiday in Venice is likely to be disappointed. The piazzas and singing gondoliers, the idiosyncratic buildings and water taxis are all there to be seen, admired and photographed for posterity. A Venice holiday will surpass all others.

No matter how many photographs or films you may have seen, it is still a jaw-dropping experience seeing Venice?s canals and palaces for the first time. That first cruise down the Grand Canal ? punctuated by exclamations and photo-snapping ? is one of life?s unforgettable experiences.

Travelers seeking an alternative to Venice should head away from the main conurbation to an area known as the Lido. With sandy beaches and resort-style hotels on offer, it offers a slice of relaxation in this bustling city. It can be impressively to Cheap flight to Venice to Venice from the UK.

The busiest tourist seasons in Venice are between spring and autumn (April to October), over Christmas and during the popular Carnival in February. However these may not be the best times to travel to Venice if you don?t enjoy crowds of sight-seers. Winter is a good option for a Venice holiday because although it is cool and wet the sights are more easily enjoyed and accommodation is cheaper.

Venice is a never-ending maze of tiny cobbled courtyards and winding back streets, linked by arched bridges and dotted with osterias (bars), traditional trattorias (restaurants) and obligatory tourist gift shops. But the real attraction of Venice lies in its unique waterways and the magical atmosphere created by its operatic gondoliers at work.

10 gadgets that'll help you relive the '80s

11 hrs.

If you stop and think about it, the progress we've made in technology over the last 20-some years has been staggering. It really wasn't that long ago that we were all using landline phones and playing Atari games. Maybe things have moved a little too fast and you miss the days when you actually wrote things down and could hang up on a telemarketer with authority thanks to a thick rotary receiver.? If so, the following gadgets might make you feel a little nostalgic.?

iCade 8-Bitty
The 8-Bitty is a follow up to the?iCade arcade cabinet for the iPad, and brings retro NES-style D-Pad gaming to your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices. Like it's big brother, the 8-Bitty is compatible with all iCade game apps, which include the Atari Classics collection, Pac-Man, Super Mega Worm and more. Unfortunately, if your app constantly crashes blowing into the phone is unlikely to fix the problem like it did with those old cartridges. $24.99 (coming soon) -?ThinkGeek?via?Nerd Approved

Retro Mac iPad cover?Apple old-timers might recognize this iPad 2 cover as a facsimile of the original 128K Macintosh. It snaps on to the back of your tablet and includes cutouts for your camera and speakers. Apparently, the original retailed for $2,495 way back in 1984. So, in comparison, the Apple of today is (*gasp*) a real bargain. $36.99 -?USBfever?

LEGO Moleskine notebook
These days, whenever I write out something longer than my name with a pen the cursive feels awkward. So I've got to practice a few times before showtime on a birthday card. Still, part of me profoundly misses the simplicity of an old-fashioned paper notebook. Moleskine is proudly keeping up the tradition with quality construction and hip?new themes like Star Wars?and Lego. The Lego version will be released on March 1st for $21.95 with features like 240 lined pages and a real Lego plate embedded in the cover. $21.95 -?Moleskine?via?Nerd Approved

Commodore 64 Keyboard PC
Commodore USA recently released updated versions of the Commodore 64 with specs that could include (depending on your configuration) a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB DDR3 memory, Intel HD Graphics, a 2TB hard drive and more. All units come with Ubuntu 10.10, but you can download the Commodore OS Vision Linux build demoed in the video above if you want a more authentic retro feel without sacrificing modern functionality. $349-$1499 -?Commodore?via?CubicleBot

The Drinkman hip flask
The spirit of the cassette Walkman alive and well in the form of this novelty Drinkman hip flask. A word of caution though -- it will be hard to to keep your drinking under wraps when you're the guy people see carrying around a cassette Walkman in 2012. And no matter how much you wish it could, the Drinkman flask won't rewind back to a point when you were sober. Available starting this May. Price TBA. -?Mustard?via?That's Nerdalicious

LomoKino
Granted, there are plenty of retro smartphone apps out there that are designed to give your videos a retro look, but the whole process is too easy. It just doesn't feel like your taking retro videos. Enter the LomoKino smartphone holder. It allows you to shoot 35mm movies in analog and convert them to digital directly on your phone using a viewer attachment that you have to manually crank. With any luck someone will come out with an wooden box camera accessory complete with a hood so I don't have to hassle with converting my daguerreotypes to digital anymore. $24.90 -?Lomography

Retro USB mouse
As far as I'm concerned, the entire concept of a computer mouse is obsolete, so the idea of buying a mouse that looks like it should be wearing big hair and a jean jacket seems completely ridiculous. On the plus side, this updated version is optical and connects via USB. $19.99 -ThinkGeek?

Keypad watch
If you thought a calculator watch was as nerdy back in the day, take a look at this new Click Keypad Watch. To find out the time, press any key. Lights embedded in the keys will illuminate one by one, revealing the hour then the minute. So, the illumination sequence 0, 9, 1, 5 would mean the time is 9:15. Not only that, the watch comes in hot, sexy colors like old PC beige. $99 -?Watchismo?via?Fashionably Geek

Retro handset holster
Remember when people who carried cell phones were considered elitist? Well, d-baggery has come full circle with this Retro Handset Holster. If you thought wearing a belt holster for a normal cell phone was bad, try something that's designed to hold one of those old-school receiver accessories that you plug into your cell phone. Of course,?it could always be worse. $25 -?Etsy?via?Fashionably Geek

Mario coin block lamp
This custom Super Mario coin block LED pendant lamp is touch sensitive, so you can punch it on and punch it off with each touch registering a classic coin sound from the game. Plus, every 8th hit is rewarded with a 1-UP. Man, it's hard to believe that the original Super Mario Bros. came out almost 30 years ago. So this lamp kind of makes me feel old ... but not "The Clapper" old. $74.99 -?Etsy?via?Nerd Approved

Neurotoxins in shark fins: A human health concern

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? Sharks are among the most threatened of marine species worldwide due to unsustainable overfishing. They are primarily killed for their fins to fuel the growing demand for shark fin soup, which is an Asia delicacy. A new study by University of Miami (UM) scientists in the journal Marine Drugs has discovered high concentrations of BMAA in shark fins, a neurotoxin linked to neurodegenerative diseases in humans including Alzheimer's and Lou Gehrig Disease (ALS). The study suggests that consumption of shark fin soup and cartilage pills may pose a significant health risk for degenerative brain diseases.

"Shark fins are primarily derived through finning, a practice where by shark fins are removed at sea and the rest of the mutilated animal is thrown back in the water to die," said co-author Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, research assistant professor of Marine Affairs & Policy and director of the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (RJD) at UM. "Estimates suggest that fins from as many as 70 million sharks end up in soup. As a result, many shark species are on the road to extinction. Because sharks play important roles in maintaining balance in the oceans, not only is shark fin soup injurious to the marine environment, but our study suggests that it is likely harmful to the people who are consuming them."

Seven species of shark were tested for this study: blacknose, blacktip, bonnethead, bull, great hammerhead, lemon, and nurse sharks. Samples were collected from live animals in waters throughout South Florida.

"The concentrations of BMAA in the samples are a cause for concern, not only in shark fin soup, but also in dietary supplements and other forms ingested by humans," says study co-author Prof. Deborah Mash, Director of the UM Miami Brain Endowment Bank. The Bank supports basic and clinical research and holds one of the world's largest collection of postmortem human brains encompassing a wide range of neurological disorders. In 2009, Mash and her co-authors published a study in the journal Acta Neurological Scandinavica, demonstrating that patients dying with diagnoses of Alzheimer's Disease and ALS had unusually high levels of BMAA in their brains, up to 256 ng/mg, whereas normal healthy aged people had no BMAA or only trace quantities of the toxin present. "BMAA was first linked to neurodegenerative diseases in Guam, which resulted in the progressive loss of structure and function of neurons."

The shark study found a similar range and even higher BMAA in the fins tested, levels of between 144 and 1836 ng/mg of BMAA, which overlapped the levels measured in the brains of the Alzheimer's and ALS victims. Coincidentally, this level fits with the BMAA levels in fruit bats examined by Paul Cox in Guam, animals which concentrate BMAA from their diet of cycad seeds. He linked ingestion of fruit bats to the severe ALS/Parkinsonism dementia that afflicted local indigenous people.

"Not only does this work provide important information on one probable route of human exposure to BMAA, it may lead to a lowering of the demand for shark fin soup and consumption of shark products, which will aid ocean conservation efforts," added Hammerschlag.

The project was funded through a donation from the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation. Established in 1990, the foundation takes a leadership role in supporting unique opportunities that provide solutions to issues related to the community, education, and the environment.

(AP) ? Police say a gun brought to a Washington state elementary school in a third grader's backpack discharged, apparently by accident, critically wounding an 8-year-old classmate.

Investigators were trying to determine how the 9-year-old boy got the gun and why he brought it to school, a Bremerton, Wash., police spokesman said.

"At this stage of the investigation, detectives believe the shooting was accidental," Lt. Peter Fisher said in a statement late Wednesday.

At the end of Wednesday's school day, a bullet went through the backpack and hit the little girl, Fisher said.

Amina Kocer-Bowman was in critical condition Wednesday night after surgery at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital spokeswoman Leila Gray said.

The Bremerton Schools superintendent's office said the girl was shot in the abdomen.

KING-TV reported that her friends and relatives gave a 'thumbs up' signal to reporters as they left the hospital late Wednesday.

The boy who brought the gun to Armin Jahr Elementary in Bremerton was booked into Kitsap County juvenile detention for investigation of unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault.

The gun was recovered from a classroom. Police did not immediately describe it.

Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser said the school, with about 400 students, planned to be open for classes on Thursday. She said three counselors would be available to talk with teachers, students and parents.

The school is in a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 miles west of Seattle, across Puget Sound.

Fisher said officers and emergency crews were dispatched to the school around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in response to a call that a student was shot by another student.

The school went into lockdown immediately after the shooting, Glaser said. Parents picked up their children later in the afternoon.

In the latest rating by the Brady Campaign, a national gun control advocacy group, Washington scored no points in the child safety category because the state does not require trigger locks for guns and lacks laws to prevent child access to firearms.

"Washington state is a loosely regulated state when it comes to firearms," said Gregory Roberts, executive director of Washington Cease Fire, a Brady Campaign affiliate.

Amanda Roth, a staff attorney for the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence, said 27 states and the District of Columbia have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include requirements to use gun locks and criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns.

Shanghai court hears lawsuit against Apple over use of iPad ...

It also contends that the Chinese LCD maker has not marketed or sold its own ?IPAD,? or Internet Personal Access Device for years, thus possibly invalidating its claim to the trademark.

The hearing adjourned after a fractious four-hour session which saw the judge repeatedly admonishing both sides to observe proper court protocol as they argued across the courtroom. No date was announced for a judgment or further hearings.

?Apple has no right to sell iPads under that name,? Xie said. ?The agreement to sell the trademark is not valid under Chinese law.?

Proview is suing to have Apple stop selling the iPad in China under that name. It has also sought to have commercial authorities in many cities order sales to stop. Ma Xiaodong, another Proview lawyer, said after the hearing that the company plans to file lawsuits against Apple in other cities.

Apple?s lawyers demanded that Proview provide evidence that its product is actually marketed in China, contending that the heavily indebted Chinese company has no ability to produce the IPAD. They also demanded Proview provide guarantees it could pay compensation for any losses if the court were to halt iPad sales pending a final decision on ownership of the trademark. The Proview side said it could pay in cash.

Apple has appealed an earlier ruling against it in a court in Shenzhen, a city in southern China?s Guangdong province. The Guangdong High Court is due to hear that case on Feb. 29.

Earlier, Xie said that since no final decisions have been reached in various legal disputes over the issue, both sides were ?still able to sit together and reach an out-of-court settlement.? Apple has shown no indication of willingness to settle.

The trademark case is highlighting mixed attitudes toward Apple in China. Chinese are just as crazy about iPads and iPhones as consumers anywhere else and the devices are manufactured in China, employing hundreds of thousands of people.

But public awareness has been growing of criticism over the labor and environmental practices of huge factories that assemble the devices. Taiwan?s Foxconn Technology Group, which makes iPads in China, has been under intense scrutiny after a spate of worker suicides. It recently raised wages by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, insists it holds the trademark rights to the iPad in China, having purchased them from Proview for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000) through a company set up for that purpose.

A court in Hong Kong, which has a separate legal system from mainland China, ruled in July that Proview had acted with the intention of ?injuring Apple.? Proview?s lawyers argued Wednesday that any rulings in Hong Kong were not admissable in Chinese courts.

So far, iPads have been pulled from shelves in some Chinese cities but there has been no sign of action at the national level.

One-Night Stay for One or Two with Meals, Fitness Classes, and Spa Credit at Heartland Spa & Fitness Resort in Illinois

Health-and-Wellness Retreat in Lakeside Setting

A former dairy farm may seem like an unusual choice to open a health-and-wellness retreat. Yet in 1983, Heartland Spa & Fitness Resort transformed one into a holistic spa center and garnered national attention?perhaps due in part to one famous guest, Oprah Winfrey. Surrounded by 32 acres of woodlands on a 3-acre lake, the spa has been praised as ?uniquely Midwestern and unpretentious? by the Chicago Sun-Times. The red barn and surrounding grounds now house workout facilities and a spa, replete with an indoor pool, whirlpool, and sauna.

A low-fat, low-sodium, house-made meal courtesy of Heartland?s chef greets arriving guests, kick-starting 24 hours of healthy eating. Afterward, settle into the five-bedroom, two-bathroom Coach House for a good night?s sleep. The next day?s breakfast starts the day with nutritious vegetarian dishes, including egg-white frittatas, oatmeal, and peanut-butter-and-banana muffins.

Heartland Spa & Fitness Resort?s two-to-one staff-to-guest ratio ensures all guests are supported and pampered as they unwind. An underground tunnel connects the manor to the spa barn and shields out the cold. Yoga, Pilates, tai chi, cardio kickboxing, and other fitness classes take place throughout the day, and a locker room fully equipped with a sauna and hot tub makes for a relaxing reprieve. Other spa services await, including an aromatherapy manicure ($ 40) or a Brazilian bikini wax ($ 50). Before departing, guests enjoy a peaceful lunch in one of Heartland?s common areas, which are technology-free to avoid interruptions from cell phones and tractor beams.

Hepatitis C Deaths Rising, Baby Boomers Most At Risk: CDC Report

Associated Press:

Deaths from liver-destroying hepatitis C are on the rise, and new data shows baby boomers especially should take heed -- they are most at risk.

Federal health officials are considering whether anyone born between 1945 and 1965 should get a one-time blood test to check if their livers harbor this ticking time bomb. The reason: Two-thirds of people with hepatitis C are in this age group, most unaware that a virus that takes a few decades to do its damage has festered since their younger days.
