CinemaNow adds Ultraviolet support to some of its movies

Bestbuy's CinemaNow has started to embed UltraViolet content into their video-streaming service. It's no huge surprise -- given that the retailer is a founding member of DECE -- but a good sign for anyone shoring up a collection of discs with UV digital content. CinemaNow identified compatible content with an Ultraviolet icon (seen above), while the service continues to gradually upgrade its SD content to big-screen friendly full HD. According to some early users, there's some teething issues with links to UV versions, however, suggesting CinemaNow's still tweaking the setup.

(AP) ? Hector "Macho" Camacho was a brash fighter with a mean jab and an aggressive style, launching himself furiously against some of the biggest names in boxing. And his bad-boy persona was not entirely an act, with a history of legal scrapes that began in his teens and continued throughout his life.

The man who once starred at the pinnacle of boxing, winning several world titles, died Saturday back in the Puerto Rican town of Bayamon where he was born, ambushed in a parking lot in a car where packets of cocaine were found.

Camacho, 50, left behind a reputation for flamboyance ? leading fans in cheers of "It's Macho time!" before fights ? and for fearsome skills as one of the top fighters of his generation.

"He excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style," promoter Don King told The Associated Press.

Camacho fought professionally for three decades, from his humble debut against David Brown at New York's Felt Forum in 1980 to an equally forgettable swansong against Saul Duran in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2010.

In between, he fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.

"Hector was a fighter who brought a lot of excitement to boxing," said Ed Brophy, executive director of International the Boxing Hall of Fame. "He was a good champion. Roberto Duran is kind of in a class of his own, but Hector surely was an exciting fighter that gave his all to the sport."

Camacho's family moved to New York when he was young and he grew up in Spanish Harlem, which at the time was rife with crime. Camacho landed in jail as a teenager before turning to boxing, which for many kids in his neighborhood provided an outlet for their aggression.

"This is something I've done all my life, you know?" Camacho told The Associated Press after a workout in 2010. "A couple years back, when I was doing it, I was still enjoying it. The competition, to see myself perform. I know I'm at the age that some people can't do this no more."

Former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a friend since childhood, described Camacho as "like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," but otherwise combined a friendly nature with a powerful jab.

"He's a good human being, a good hearted person," Laporte said as he waited with other friends and members of the boxer's family outside the hospital in San Juan after the shooting. "A lot of people think of him as a cocky person but that was his motto ... Inside he was just a kid looking for something."

Laporte lamented that Camacho never found a mentor to guide him outside the boxing ring.

"The people around him didn't have the guts or strength to lead him in the right direction," Laporte said. "There was no one strong enough to put a hand on his shoulder and tell him how to do it."

George Lozada, a longtime friend from New York who flew to Puerto Rico on Saturday, recalled that just hours after he was released from prison after serving a murder sentence, he received a call from Camacho, who was waiting outside his apartment in a black Porsche.

"He said, 'Come down, I'm taking you shopping,'" Lozada said, wiping away tears.

"Because of him, man, I got what I got today," he said, pointing to pictures on his smartphone of his 6-year-old daughter. "Because of Hector, I stopped the drug scene ... He's helped so many people."

Drug, alcohol and other problems trailed Camacho himself after the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

Camacho's former wife, Amy, obtained a restraining order against him in 1998, alleging he threatened her and one of their children. The couple, who had two children at the time, later divorced.

He divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida in recent years, appearing on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube.

Inside the boxing ring, Camacho flourished. He won three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, and after turning pro, he quickly became a contender with an all-action style reminiscent of other Puerto Rican fighters.

Long promoted by Don King, Camacho won his first world title by beating Rafael Limon in a super-featherweight bout in Puerto Rico on Aug. 7, 1983. He moved up in weight two years later to capture a lightweight title by defeating Jose Luis Ramirez, and successfully defended the belt against fellow countryman Edwin Rosario.

The Rosario fight, in which the victorious Camacho still took a savage beating, persuaded him to scale back his ultra-aggressive style in favor of a more cerebral, defensive approach.

The change in style was a big reason that Camacho, at the time 38-0, lost a close split decision to Greg Haugen at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in 1991.

Camacho won the rematch to set up his signature fight against Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez, this time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Camacho was roundly criticized for his lack of action, and the Mexican champion won a lopsided unanimous decision to retain the lightweight title.

"Even though people say I beat him easily, it wasn't that way," Chavez told Mexico's ESPN-Radio Formula this week. "He was a very fast fighter, he faced everything and it was very hard for me."

"He revolutionized boxing, Chavez said. "It's a shame he got mixed up in so many problems."

After that loss, Camacho became the name opponent for other rising contenders, rather than the headliner fighting for his own glory.

He lost a unanimous decision to another young Puerto Rican fighter, Trinidad, and was soundly defeated by De La Hoya. In 1997, Camacho ended Leonard's final comeback with a fifth-round knockout. It was Camacho's last big victory even though he boxed for another decade.

The fighter's last title bout came in 1997 against welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya, who won by unanimous decision. Camacho's last fight was his defeat by Saul Duran in May 2010. He had a career record of 79-6-3.

Doctors pronounced Camacho dead on Saturday after he was removed from life support at his family's direction. He never regained consciousness after at least at least one gunman crept up to the car in a darkened parking lot and opened fire.

No arrests and have been made, and authorities have not revealed many details beyond the facts that police found cocaine in the car and that the boxer and his friend, who was killed at the scene, had no idea the attack was coming. "Apparently, this was a surprise," said Alex Diaz, a police spokesman.

Survivors include his mother; three sisters, Raquel, Estrella and Ester; a brother, Felix; and four sons, Hector Jr., Taylor, Christian and Justin.

Kitchen Cabinet Design ? Incorporating Different Styles into Your ...

Quality kitchen cabinets can add beauty and style to any kitchen d?cor. When your old cabinets start looking shabby from use, you can change the entire look of your kitchen by replacing the old cabinets with new. However, that can be cost prohibitive for many people, because quality kitchen cabinets don?t come cheap. However, there is a way you can get a new look for far less cost, and that?s by only replacing the cabinet doors.

It?s important to have well-designed cabinets in order to maximize the storage space you have in your kitchen. In making plans to renovate your kitchen, be sure to establish goals that you definitely want to accomplish in your design so that you can make sure they?re included in the finished room.

The choice of wood in kitchen cabinets is a very important feature. You will find cabinets made of many woods including oak, maple, pine, cherry, hickory, poplar, alder, and birch. The best woods for cabinetry are birch, maple and cherry; however, they are expensive. For a more economical approach, you can glaze alder or poplar with a hard coating which will give them an antique look. For the most durable cabinets, choose hickory or oak, both of which are extremely hard woods. Never choose pine if you have small children, because pine is a soft wood that will get damaged more easily.

The three styles of kitchen cabinet doors that are made today include slab, raised panel, or recessed panel. Along with these different door styles, you will find many different cabinet designs from which to choose. Some of the most commonly-used styles are contemporary, country, Shaker, and traditional.

Many styles of kitchen cabinets are made from a combination of the woods mentioned above. In addition, a lot of cabinets have parts that don?t show made of plywood and particleboard.

You can buy solid hardwood cabinets, but they are going to be quite expensive. The preferred style of cabinetry with most people is cabinets made from both solid woods and plywood. Plywood is regarded in the industry as being stronger and thicker than particleboard even though particleboard is not as prone to expansion.

Start your kitchen remodel by deciding exactly what kind of look you would like to achieve. Would you prefer to have a traditionally-designed kitchen with raised-panel doors and ornate moldings? Maybe you?d rather have a rustic kitchen using knotty-pine and simple hardware. Picture the kitchen you?d like to have and then do some research to find the cabinets that would best fit into your d?cor. While you?re doing this, however, be sure to keep your budget in mind.

Garment salesman arrested in 3 NY merchant deaths

NEW YORK (AP) ? A garment salesman was arrested on charges he systematically killed three shopkeepers as they worked alone in their clothing stores after a pharmacy worker recognized him from surveillance footage. Authorities believe the man had been poised to strike again.

Police said Salvatore Perrone, 63, was taken into custody Wednesday in the suspected serial killings that scores of New York City detectives were investigating.

A pharmacy worker recognized him as the balding man shown in surveillance footage leaving the scene of the most recent shooting, Nov. 16, with a duffel bag, police said.

Another shopkeeper came forward and said Perrone had gone into his store and questioned him about whether he worked alone and when he closed, police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

"It's reasonable to assume he was going to keep doing this, and, by arresting him, we saved lives," Kelly said at a news conference.

Perrone, of Staten Island, was arrested on charges of murder. He was in custody Wednesday and couldn't be reached for comment. A message left on his cellphone was not returned, and it was unclear if he had an attorney.

Detectives said they found the duffel bag at his girlfriend's home. Inside, they said, was a sawed-off rifle used in the killings, along with .22-caliber ammunition, black gloves, women's clothing, a bloody knife and a bottle of bleach.

Perrone's fingerprint was lifted from the murder weapon, Kelly said.

Initially, authorities thought the killer might have targeted the Brooklyn shopkeepers, who were from Iran and Egypt, because of their Middle Eastern backgrounds. But on Wednesday Kelly said there was no motive he could speak of.

In the most recent killing, Rahmatollah Vahidipour, an Iranian, was shot three times in the head and chest at his store, the She She Boutique.

After that killing, detectives discovered the same gun was used in the fatal shootings of two other shopkeepers when ballistics matched the .22-caliber gun shell casings on all three. On July 6, Mohamed Gebeli, an Egyptian, was found shot in the back of his shop, Valentino Fashion Inc. On Aug. 6, Isaac Kadare, also Egyptian, was shot in the head in his store, Amazing 99 Cent Deal.

There were other similarities in the deaths, authorities said: The bodies were all partially obscured, by clothing or, in one case, a box. The locations of the shops form an equilateral triangle and are about 4 miles apart, with addresses that contain the number eight.

Police earlier this week said they were looking to speak to four people who possibly witnessed the most recent killing and released video and clear images of the four. But they zeroed in on the man with the bag, who they now say was Perrone.

Kelly called Perrone "talkative" with detectives and said he made incriminating statements. But Kelly refused to reveal what Perrone said.

Police said they believe Perrone carried the murder weapon in the bag and traveled by subway.

Perrone, a Brooklyn native, is divorced and lives with his girlfriend. He went store to store trying to sell clothing, police said, but it was unclear if he had tried to sell to any of the victims.

Perrone was arrested in Franconia Township, Pa., in 2001 and charged with stalking, harassment, burglary and public drunkenness, but those charges were dropped when he pleaded guilty to a trespassing charge.

(Pa. state senator Larry Farnese, in file photo, provided.)

The history of gaming in Philadelphia is one of long delays, unnecessary expense, and missed opportunity, says state senator Larry Farnese (right) in a letter to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

In the letter, he outlines four steps to make the process smoother, including at least three public hearings and a web site where bidders make full disclosure about plans and local impact, ?so that we do not run into the same problems we had in 2006 and, most importantly, so that people do not feel they were steamrolled by this process like they did a few years ago.?

Community groups are already joining forces to voice concerns.? The North Broad Coalition, for example, has been formed to focus on traffic and crime issues related to a proposal to put the casino in the former Philadelphia Inquirer building at Broad and Callowhill Streets (see related story).

Farnese says the Sugarhouse casino ? Philadelphia?s first ? has shown that such issues can be resolved.

?We are in a different position than we were back in 2006,? he says.

Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo's new console is an anomaly in the game console ecosystem, but not for Nintendo. The company that -- in just the last decade -- popularized stylus-powered gaming, microphone-powered gaming and motion-based gaming, is once again pushing game control inputs forward. And just like its previous consoles, lessons learned from past hardware build the foundation of its latest effort: the Wii U and its bizarre-looking, but conventionally named, "GamePad."

The Wii U console itself, for instance, looks almost exactly like the original Wii. It's longer (10.6 inches vs. 8.5 inches for the Wii), a bit rounder on the edges, and there's an HDMI port out back, but overall it's quite similar to its squatter predecessor. It's enough that you'd get the two confused if they were sitting in the same entertainment center. Naturally, the beefed-up internals and Wii backwards compatibility mean you'll likely be replacing the ol' virtual tennis machine should you choose to pick one up.

Of course, the GamePad is the real star of the show here, bolstered by Nintendo's ambitious "TVii" experiment. Everyone's favorite Italian plumber looks super in HD, no doubt, but how software employs the multifaceted touchscreen tablet / traditional game controller hybrid is what really matters. So, how does the Wii U fare? Find out below.

mobile-vs-desktop-how-much-content - Web.Search.Social. The ...

Mobile Vs. Desktop: How Much Content Should You Have?Over the past few weeks,?I?ve?had a number of conversations and listened to several podcasts where people have opined on how content should be assembled for a company mobile website vs. a desktop website. There was a recurring theme that went something like this:

When creating your website, start by writing/creating the content for your mobile site first. Chances are when you come up with the important content you need for your mobile site, you?ll realize you don?t need any more content for your desktop site.

Ok, so let?s break that down into two parts.

The first part, ?start with your mobile content first?, makes sense to me. The second part, ?stop when you have put together your mobile content? does not.

Here?s why?

Start With Mobile Content First

Starting with mobile in mind first makes sense on two fronts; content delivery and graphics.

When putting together your content for a mobile audience you have the challenge of pushing data over to devices that don?t have the bandwidth or processing power of desktop computers. Publishing the right content succinctly is critical. The idea of fleshing out your minimal priority content allows you to publish the important stuff in a compact way.

Similarly, your graphics need to be compact and speedy. Larger graphics mean bigger file sizes; that?s obvious to most people. But what?isn?t?obvious is that if you take a large graphic and artificially reduce it to fit on a small screen, it?s still the same size even though the graphic looks smaller.

To get around this, developers can create alternate versions of graphics that can be used for different scenarios. On the desktop, you get the big, full-screen graphic. On mobile you get a smaller iteration of the graphic. This methodology ensures that your mobile audience only gets what it needs and no more.

To be clear, while this ideology makes sense, there is nothing wrong with working in the opposite direction ? from desktop to mobile. I?m not suggesting that one way is correct and the other is not. I?m simply proposing that both methods are perfectly reasonable.

What I don?t agree with is?

Once You Have Your Mobile Content, You Don?t Need Any More

No.

No. No. No.

And again. No.

The folks who favor this idea have a reasonable argument; if you sit down and think really hard about your site?s content needs and produce the most streamlined and elegant version of your content for your mobile website, then that content should be strong enough for your desktop users.

It makes sense. In theory. But in practice, your mobile users?aren?t?your only users. On top of that, your mobile users will also likely be your desktop users at some point.

The reason we even have a discussion about the creation of mobile content is because of limitations ? or some might say ?the features? ? of mobile devices. That should not preempt the capabilities of desktop devices. So here are some things to consider when creating your mobile content and debating whether you should create different content for your desktop.

Incentivize Your Mobile Customers To Come Back To Your Desktop Site

While your mobile content may be great, you may have more to say. Don?t hide it. Tell your mobile users that there is more to discover on your desktop site. And if that mobile user is willing, give them a link to your desktop site. This may present technical challenges depending on how your site is created, but new methods such as Responsive Design do a lot to mitigate the problems.

Remember The Infrequently Asked Questions

FAQs are great, but only for the people who have those specific questions. Dedicating space to questions that?aren?t?frequent will be helpful to those users who have different needs than the majority of your customers. Remember that to each individual, their question is the most important regardless of how you rank it.

You may or may not want to present these IAQs to your mobile audience but having them on your desktop site?doesn?t?have any down side.

Give Desktop Users Deeper Content

Mobile users typically want small pieces of information very fast. That?s not necessarily true of desktop users. A mobile user may be satisfied with a single paragraph of content that is distilled down to its essence, but the same user on a desktop may want to research deeper.

Video Is A Different Experience On Mobile And Desktop

Mobile devices that are capable of playing video face the challenge of bandwidth and power. If the device is on WiFi, then video may work fine; otherwise streaming video may present a challenge. In either scenario, video streaming will drain the battery quickly.

Creating small, highly compressed videos may be ideal for those mobile devices, but the quality would not be suitable for desktop playback.

Unless you are using some homegrown method, some of these video challenges can be mitigated by using a streaming service such as YouTube that automatically scales depending on the playback device.

But consider that you may want to produce shorter videos for mobile and longer, more detailed videos for desktop users. And don?t forget to?

Check Your Stats

When you first launch your site, it?s hard to make decisions about how to distinguish your mobile content from your desktop content. Once your site starts accumulating traffic statistics, you can use that information to make decisions about how to sculpt your content for mobile and desktop use.

Also, gauge the communications from your customers. If your customers are asking questions about content that is on your desktop site, but not your mobile site, then that is a loud indicator that that content should be on your mobile site as well.

Give Your Mobile Users Power To Manage Their Experience

Twitter has a series of features related to mobile use. For example, I can set my account to text my phone every time my wife tweets or every time someone retweets my tweets. It?s a very good feature.

But every once in a while, I am in a meeting or in an environment where I don?t want to hear the dinging of the texts from Twitter, but guess what? Twitter?s mobile interface does not allow you to manage your mobile settings.

The Twitter app has no option for managing texts. The Twitter site (when viewed on a mobile device) does not allow you to manage your mobile features. The only way to manage your mobile features is to log on to Twitter?s desktop interface. This is remarkably shortsighted. It would stand to reason that while I am on a mobile device, I would want to tweak how Twitter interacts with my mobile device.

Give Your Mobile Users The Same Key Features As Your Desktop Users

If you have an important or high-demand feature make sure to include it on both your desktop and mobile environment. One of my favorite training sites is Lynda.com. When you have a membership, you can watch training lessons on double speed. I do this if I want a refresher on a topic. I have the Lynda.com app on my iPad, but the double speed feature is not available.

I would probably consume more of their products and services if I was able to consume their content the same way on my mobile device.

Don?t Undermine Your Desktop Users To Satisfy Your Mobile Users And Visa Versa

Figure out how to create the best experience for all of your users. Find the nexus between your mobile users and desktop users and consider that your sweet spot, but don?t ignore anything outside of your sweet spot. If you don?t know what Response Design is, you owe it to yourself and your business to have at least a elementary understanding because it is the future of content delivery on the Internet.

Do you have your own thoughts on mobile versus desktop content? Let me know in the comments.

Clinton heads to Mideast amid Gaza crisis

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Efforts to end a week-old convulsion of Israeli-Palestinian violence drew in the world's top diplomats on Tuesday, with President Barack Obama dispatching his secretary of state to the region on an emergency mission and the U.N. chief appealing from Cairo for an immediate cease-fire.

Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers have staked out tough, hard-to-bridge positions, and the gaps keep alive the threat of an Israeli ground invasion. On Tuesday, grieving Gazans were burying militants and civilians killed in ongoing Israeli airstrikes, and barrages of rockets from Gaza sent terrified Israelis scurrying to take cover.

From Egypt, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said he came to the region because of the "alarming situation."

"This must stop, immediate steps are needed to avoid further escalation, including a ground operation," Ban said. "Both sides must hold fire immediately ... Further escalation of the situation could put the entire region at risk."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton departed for the Mideast on Tuesday from Cambodia, where she had accompanied Obama on a visit. Clinton is to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and Egyptian leaders in Cairo, according to U.S. and Palestinian officials.

The U.S. considers Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide and other attacks, to be a terror group and does not meet with its officials. Washington blames Hamas rocket fire for the latest eruption of violence and says Israel has the right to defend itself. At the same time, it has cautioned that a ground invasion could send casualties spiraling.

By Tuesday, 115 Palestinians, including 54 civilians, have been killed since Israel mounted an air onslaught that has so far included nearly 1,500 strikes. Some 840 people have been wounded, including 225 children, Gaza health officials said.

Three Israeli civilians have also been killed and dozens wounded since the fighting began last week, the numbers possibly kept down by a rocket-defense system Israel developed with U.S. funding. More than 1,000 rockets have been fired at Israel this week, the military said.

Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel wouldn't balk at a broader military operation.

"I prefer a diplomatic solution," Netanyahu said in a statement after meeting with Germany's foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, who is also in the region trying to advance peace efforts. "But if the fire continues, we will be forced to take broader measures and will not hesitate to do so."

Successive Israeli governments have struggled to come up with an effective policy toward Hamas.

Neither Israel's economic blockade of the territory of 1.6 million people nor bruising military strikes have cowed Gaza's Islamists, weakened their grip on the coastal strip or fire rockets at the Jewish state.

An Israeli ground invasion would risk Israeli troop losses, and could send the number of Palestinian civilian casualties ballooning ? a toll Israel could be reluctant to risk just four years after its last invasion drew allegations of war crimes.

Still, with Israeli elections just two months away, polls show Israeli public sentiment has lined up staunchly behind the Netanyahu government's offensive.

Turkey's foreign minister and a delegation of Arab League foreign ministers headed to Gaza on Tuesday on a separate truce mission. Before setting off, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu signaled Turkey was in contact with Israel bout a truce ? an important development given the two countries' chilly ties.

"We would be involved in all kinds of efforts if it amounted to saving the life of a single brother from Gaza," Davutoglu said. "We are determined to keep all direct or indirect channels (of dialogue) open."

Turkey's once-close ties with Israel frayed badly over the high civilian toll during Israel's 2009 war in Gaza.

With tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers dispatched to the Gaza border, awaiting a possible order to invade, the truce missions were all the more urgent.

Egypt, the traditional mediator between Israel and the Arab world, has been at the center of recent diplomatic efforts.

Israel demands an end to rocket fire from Gaza and a halt to weapons smuggling into Gaza through tunnels under the border with Egypt. It also wants international guarantees that Hamas will not rearm or use Egypt's Sinai region, which abuts both Gaza and southern Israel, to attack Israelis.

Hamas wants Israel to halt all attacks on Gaza and lift tight restrictions on trade and movement to and from the territory imposed after Hamas seized Gaza by force in 2007. Israel has rejected such demands in the past.

Resurgent rocket fire set off the Israeli offensive, launched with the assassination of the Hamas military chief and followed by hundreds of airstrikes on militant rocket launchers and weapons stores.

The onslaught turned deadlier over the weekend, as airstrikes began targeting the homes of suspected Hamas activists, leading to a spike in civilian casualties. Israel sent warnings in some cases, witnesses said, but in other instances missiles hit suddenly, burying residents under the rubble of their homes.

Hamas is deeply rooted in densely populated Gaza, and the movement's activists live in the midst of ordinary Gazans. Israel says militants are using civilians as human shields, both for their own safety and to launch rocket strikes from residential neighborhoods.

In one case, a senior member of the military wing of Islamic Jihad rented a small apartment in a 15-story high-rise of offices and news outlets. The militant, Ramez Harb, was killed Monday in a rocket strike that damaged the building.

One journalist said he and others were furious that Harb had apparently used their building as a hideout, putting others at risk. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared repercussions from Gaza militants.

Early Tuesday, Israeli aircraft targeted another Hamas symbol of power, the headquarters of a bank senior Hamas officials set up to sidestep international sanctions on the militant group's rule. After Hamas overran Gaza, foreign lenders stopped doing business with its militant-led government, afraid of running afoul of international terror financing laws.

The inside of the bank was destroyed and a building supply business in the basement was damaged.

"I'm not involved in politics," said the business owner, Suleiman Tawil. "I'm a businessman. But the more the Israelis pressure us, the more we will support Hamas."

Israel and Gaza's militants have a long history of fighting, but the dynamics have changed radically since they last warred four years ago. Though their hardware is no match for the Israeli military, militants have upgraded their capabilities with weapons smuggled in from Iran and Libya, Israeli officials claim.

Only a few years ago, tens of thousands of Israelis were within rocket range. Today those numbers have swollen to 3.5 million, as the militants' improved weapons reached Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time this past week.

Hamas, a branch of the region-wide Muslim Brotherhood, is also negotiating from a stronger position than four years ago. At that time, Hamas was internationally isolated; now, the Muslim Brotherhood is in power in Egypt and Tunisia, and Hamas is also getting political support from Qatar and Turkey.

At home, too, the military offensive has shored up Hamas at a time when it was riven by internal divisions over its direction and the new Egyptian government's refusal to lift the blockade it imposed along with Israel after Hamas seized the territory.

This newfound backing contrasts radically with the loss of stature the Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has endured as Palestinians lose faith in his ability to bring them a state through negotiations with Israel.

Energy Security Problem Shifts to Asia

There is a heavy agenda for President Obama during his three day visit to Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. At the East Asia Summit he will join Asean leaders plus representatives from Russia, Japan and China, seeking common cause with his counterparts on issues affecting the balance of powers within Asia, as well as the United States' role there.

The question of Asian energy security ought to be high up the agenda.

President Obama will arrive with the assurance of a leader whose country is on its way towards the 'freedom from foreign oil' prioritized in his election night speech. The International Energy Agency recently came out to say that, 'In the New Policies Scenario... the United States becomes a net exporter of natural gas by 2020 and is almost self-sufficient in energy, in net terms, by 2035. North America emerges as a net oil exporter.'

This does not amount to US self-sufficiency in oil, as some headlines have claimed. Oil imports are supposed to be offset by exports of shale gas ? a US success story ? whilst the small print of the report shows US oil and gas imports continuing from Canada, whose production pushes North America as a whole into a net exporter.

Nevertheless, the worry that the US is dependent on Middle East energy is losing substance fast. 'Oil independence' may not be realistic ? the 2012 forecasts of the US Department of Energy bring oil imports down from 50% to 22% of consumption only in the most favourable combination of scenarios ? but the trend is clear. In Europe, too, the call on imports is not expected to increase. Middle East oil now flows west only for a few special situations, which are roughly balanced by Atlantic exports to Asia.

The net effect is that Asian markets will now absorb all the oil Middle Eastern exporters have available, and the effects of any disruption will fall on them. Their scramble for supplies will increase the price of oil worldwide, but will not lead to lines at gas stations in the US and Europe. This change poses policy questions both for the US and for Asian oil importers.

Some protection is offered against disruptions of supply to OECD countries by the Emergency Response Mechanism of the International Energy Agency, an OECD subsidiary, whose ?stocks would compensate for disrupted supplies. Non-OECD countries have had a free ride on this protection so far.

The United States military and naval presence contributes to stability in the Middle East and protects oil shipping through the Straits of Hormuz. This oil now goes east, not west, and the US security of oil supply no longer depends on it. Under these circumstances, how far will the US go to defend sea lanes that mainly benefit Asian markets? In any case, some Asian countries ? notably China?may not be happy to rely on the discretion of the US to protect their oil supplies.

Moreover, except for Japan and Korea, they are not participants in the OECD?IEA scheme for maintaining supplies during disruptions (though China and Korea hold the strategic stocks under government control). The US 'pivot to Asia' could include asking the big Asian importers to develop a regional scheme for managing supply disruptions, or to cooperate with the OECD scheme, as a quid pro quo for the US contribution to Asian oil security.

The US will suffer if the next disruption of oil supplies, falling on Asia, causes a storm in oil prices which will disrupt the world and US economies. Obama should bear this in mind as he considers the geostrategic implications of 'freedom from foreign oil'.

3 Simple Yet Effective Tips for Writing Longer Blog Posts

writing on laptopWriting long blog posts is the need of the hour, for they not only help in improving your blog?s authority in the eyes of search engines but also give you an opportunity to better serve your readers by providing them with comprehensive information.

Since I have noticed bloggers refrain from writing articles longer than 300-400 words and tend to focus more on writing shorter posts in order to increase the quantity of posts in their blogs and also save themselves the trouble of creative more content, here are some tips that would be helpful for you in writing longer blog posts without any hassles:

1. Research Well

Once you?ve decided the topic of your post, you should spend a reasonable amount of time in researching about it and trying to get into the depths of the topic. You can do this by reading other blogs who have written on some variations of that topic and then brainstorming your mind for some more valuable points which are missing in other articles so that your post can stand out among the others.

Doing this will ensure that will never run out of points to discuss when writing your post and you will be able to produce an interesting article that touches upon a number of ideas, thereby engaging your readers and improving your credibility as a blogger.

2. Elucidate your points

Once you?ve jotted down points for your post, explaining them would be a piece of cake and you will easily be able to discuss your points at length. Not only will this help increase the word count but your readers would also get in-depth information which will help them understand the ideas in a better way.

However at the same time, you should make sure that in your quest to lengthen the article, you do not make your post sound uninteresting and boring to your readers. To prevent this, you should make it a point to avoid being repetitive and do not go about beating the bush instead of providing value to your readers.

3. Give Examples

The best way of writing long posts is to put in your own perspective in them as well. This strategy is used by most of the top bloggers like Yaro Starak, Darren Rowse and other prominent bloggers wherein they use their personal examples to elaborate their points, thereby adding a personal element in their posts that resonates with their readers.

For instance, if you are writing a post on how to use guest blogging effectively, you can cite your own example and share with your readers what strategies you used while guest blogging on other blogs and how that helped you to grow your blog and readership.

This serves a dual purpose ? firstly, your readers would get to better understand the ideas presented in the post thanks to the live examples, and secondly, as these posts tend to get labelled as pillar content, they generally attract a lot of traffic and trackbacks as other bloggers in the niche link back to these articles which increases the backlinks count of the blog, thereby boosting its rankings in search engines.

While these were some simple yet effective ideas that will help you to write longer blog posts, it is not necessary that each and every post of yours should be more than 1000 words. In fact, contrary to popular belief, readers tend to avoid reading such long posts, so you should ideally try to keep the number of words to around 600 or so, as this will keep both your readers as well as search engines happy.

In a Regulatory First, JPMorgan Suspended from Trading in Energy Market

A unit of JPMorgan has been suspended from trading in the California Energy Market for six months at market rates, but in a nod to the fragility of the system the company was given five months to make a strategic withdrawal.

The suspension of JPMorgan Ventures Energy Corp. by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Wednesday was a first for the agency, which has announced 11 investigations of traders for manipulating the state?s power market. It reached a $245 million settlement with Constellation Energy Group Inc. and is seeking a record $469 million from Barclays.

The next day, JPMorgan was confronted by another regulatory agency when the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which runs the state?s power grid, petitioned federal regulators to stop the company from blocking two Huntington Beach power plants from upgrading their systems and relieving pressure on the strained state?s power supply.

FERC?s action came after JPMorgan stonewalled the agency on requests for documents pertaining to an investigation of whether the traders attempted to manipulate energy prices. ?The company made factual misrepresentations and omitted material information over the course of several months of communications with the California Independent System Operator (California ISO) and in filings to the Commission in connection with requests for information involving bidding activities in the California market,? FERC said in announcing the suspension.

While not flat out saying that JPMorgan was involved in fraud, deception or misrepresentation, the federal agency made clear that, ?In granting market-based rate authority, FERC expects that a company?s behavior will not involve fraud, deception or misrepresentation.???

California, which just this week kicked off a new carbon cap-and-trade market expected to soon be the world?s second-largest, does not benefit from any perceptions that its markets are unstable and susceptible to manipulation by sophisticated financial institutions.

Energy experts consulted by the Los Angeles Times say the JPMorgan scheme involved manipulation of the state?s market-based energy auction system. The bank essentially submitted preliminary low bids for energy (perhaps even at a negative amount), thus qualifying for ?a bid cost recovery? payment even if they weren?t accepted. Those bids would be money losers for JPMorgan if accepted, but the next day it allegedly submitted real bids too high to be accepted and pocketed the windfall.?

Papers filed in federal court said the trader?s bidding practices may have inflated consumer electricity costs by more than $57 million, but that just covers a six-month period. Some estimates put the cost to utility users as high as $200 million. Enron?s gaming of the newly-deregulated energy market in 2000 cost taxpayers $1.4 billion.

FERC said it was giving JPMorgan five months to get out because of the company?s contractual obligations and to ?give the California ISO and its market participants time to take necessary steps to maintain system reliability during the suspension period.?

JPMorgan will, apparently, be missed.

Overview

Growing tomatoes is an art form. You need just the right amount of sun, the right amount of rain, and the right amount of barbed wire and explosives to keep the hungry critters at bay. After all, it doesn?t matter how much time and energy you put into the process of growing a big, fat?tomato?if the next animal to crawl or fly by can take a bite. A farmer must be?diligent!?A farmer must be prepared! But most of all, a farmer needs the right tools and a lot of smarts. Do you have what it takes to be a?tomato?farmer? We?ll see?

The Big Fat Tomato Game, by Gamewright, is comprised of 150 Mini Tomatoes (pea sized round puff balls), 60 cards, 5 plastic Harvest Baskets, and 2 six-sided dice. The game components are of high quality and typical for Game Write titles. Of special note here are the tomatoes which are small, red puff balls. They don?t look much like tomatoes, but you?ll be whispering thanks to the game publishers when you never once have to pick up a?tomato?that has rolled off the table. The Harvest Baskets also deserve a special nod as they are made of thick brown plastic that has been molded to look like a real basket. The?tomatoes?can easily fit into this basket, as well as easily removed. The?illustrations?on?the?cards are also well worth bragging about as they are colorful,?humorous, and only serve to strengthen the game?s theme. Excellent design choices from start to finish.

Game Set Up

To set up the game, first give each player 1 Harvest Basket. This goes in front of each player.

Second, look through the cards and remove the Turn Summary and Market Time cards. Give 1 Turn Summary card to each player and place the Market Time card temporarily aside.

Third, shuffle the cards and deal out to each player 5, face-down. Players can look at their cards but should keep them hidden from their opponents at all times.

Fourth, deal out the next 10 cards on top, face-down. Randomly insert and shuffle the Market Time card within these 10 cards. Once shuffled, place the 11 cards at the bottom of the card deck. Place the deck in the middle?of the playing area and within easy reach of all the players, face-down. Make sure there is room next to the deck for a discard pile. The discard pile is referred to as the Compost Pile.

Fifth, place the 2 six-sided dice and the Mini Tomatoes in the middle of the playing area within easy reach of all the players.

You are now ready to play! Determine which farmer will go first and begin!

Old McDonald Had a?Tomato?Farm?

The game is played in rounds with each player being given a single turn per round. A player?s turn consists of 6 sequential steps which are summarized here.

Step 1: Draw Cards

A player always begins their turn drawing cards from the deck until they are holding a total of 5 cards.

Step 2: Play Thumbs Up or A Fence

In total, there are 5 types of cards. Two of those are the green Thumbs Up and the green Fence. These are easily identified by the green thumb and green fence icons on the card and represent beneficial and defensive actions taken by the player. A player can only play one of these types of cards on their turn, however, so they will have to decide which ones will best improve their farming situation each round. The green Thumbs Up cards focus on defending the?tomato?patch from various insect and?mammal?invaders. The green Fence cards are used to protect the player?s possible points. Once a Thumbs Up or Fence card is played, or if the player has neither of these types (or simply doesn?t want to play them), this step ends.

Step 3: Resolve Attacks

Cards can be played that attack a player?s tomato harvest and supply during their turn. During this step, those cards are now resolved. Sometimes they reduce the player?s total number of tomatoes and sometimes they make harvesting?tomatoes?more difficult. Regardless, they are always bad news. Unless the player took care of them during step 1, they are now in full effect and are resolved one at a time in any order. Once completed, this step ends.

Step 4: Harvest Tomatoes

Tomatoes are collected in the player?s Harvest Basket. The number of?tomatoes?they collect and put in the Harvest Basket is usually determined by rolling the 2 six-sided dice and adding the rolled values. I say ?usually? because there are cards that can be played that can dramatically increase or decrease the number of tomatoes harvested. Once collected, this step ends.

Step 5: Play A Thumbs Down

The analog opposite of the Thumbs Up is the Thumbs Down, and as you might expect, these are meant to harass players versus benefit them. Like the Thumbs Up card, a player can only play one on their turn. The Thumbs Down card (easily identified with a red thumbs down icon) is either played directly to the Compost Pile (discard pile) or is placed in front of an opponent. It all depends on if the card?s effects are triggered?immediately?or linger. The only restriction, other than only being able to play one Thumbs Down card, is that a player cannot play a Thumbs Down card on an opponent if they have three in front of them already or if they have the same Thumbs Down card already placed in front of them. For example, a player could not play a ?Pesky Weeds? card if their opponent already had that card played on them. Once a Thumbs Down card is played, or if the player decides not to play a Thumbs Down card, this step ends.

Step 6: Discard

The player now has the option to discard some or all of their cards. To do so, they simply place the cards they no longer want into the Compost Pile. This?completes?their turn and the next player going clockwise starts their turn with step 1. This continues until the endgame is triggered.

Ribbons, Stars, and Stockpiling

Three of the five types of cards have already been discussed. These were the Thumbs Up, the Fence, and the Thumbs Down card types. The two remaining card types, Stars and Blue Ribbons, can be played as interrupts or whenever the condition the card requires is present

Star cards come in two varieties. These are red Stars and green Stars. Green Stars are defensive and red Stars are offensive. They can be played out of turn and whenever the player thinks they will be the most beneficial.?The Blue Ribbon cards give the player a one time bonus and can only be played once on the player?s turn. The Blue Ribbon cards focus on?tomato?harvesting and hand management.

A player can also stockpile their tomatoes that have been collected in the Harvest Basket. In fact, the only way a player acquires points is by stockpiling their harvest (1 point per stockpiled?tomato). The stockpile is simply a designated area to the right or left of the Harvest Basket and as defined by the player. Players can move tomatoes from their Harvest Basket to their stockpile anytime during their time for free, but only once per turn. Additionally, the player must have 20 or more tomatoes in their Harvest Basket. If they do not, all the tomatoes in the Harvest Pile are returned to the?tomato?pile! Making this even more complicated is the fact that players are not allowed to recount their tomatoes in their Harvest Basket once they place them in. This means players will have to keep a running tally in their head and should only stockpile their Harvest Basket when they feel they have 20 or more.

Market Time!

The game continues until the Market Time card is drawn. Recall that this card was randomly shuffled into 10 cards, which were then placed on the bottom of the deck. As soon as any player draws this card, the game?immediately?comes to a halt and all the players count their tomatoes. Tomatoes not yet claimed and tomatoes in each players Harvest Basket are ignored. Only those tomatoes that players have stockpiled are counted. Each player will gain 1 point per stockpiled?tomato. The player with the most points wins the game and is crowned the?TOMATO?KING or given some other equally ridiculous title.

Prediction

The game design and play, just based off the rules, already leads me to believe this game will be a big winner with the Child and Parent Geeks. The Gamer Geeks are going to, at the very, tolerate the game. Not because it is a bad game, mind you, but because it is a game that was designed for families and not the gamer elitists. But you never know and that?s why we test these games out.

Teaching the game took a bit with the Child Geeks who were not?familiar?with card games that have different actions. We had a few new Child Geek testers at our table who had only played traditional card games. For those Child Geeks who were already?familiar with games like? The Big Fat?Tomato?Game, they caught on pretty quick. The icons on the cards help a great deal, and the card text does a great job of explaining what the card can and cannot do. I told all my players to ?read the card first? before they asked me any questions. Nine times out of 10, the card answered the player?s questions.

The only other area that was?confusing?for the Child Geeks (at this point, the Parent and Gamer Geeks knew what the game was all about and had no other questions) was the tomato gathering and scoring points. I had to remind them several times about two important aspects of the game. First, only the?tomatoes?you collect and put in your scoring pile count, not the ones in the basket. Second, if you try to put your tomatoes in your basket in the scoring pile and there ARE NOT at least 20 tomatoes in there, all of them go away. I wanted to make sure this was exceedingly clear so as to avoid sad faces and hurt feelings.

Once I was satisfied that my little geek was ready to play, I reset the game for just him and I to play a 2-player game. As I did so, I asked him his thoughts on the game so far.

?I like how the cards can help and hurt you, but I especially like the little tomatoes!? ~ Liam (age 8)

The little tomatoes are pretty cool. Let?s see if the game is as cool as the little red tomatoes that are now all over my table or is?rotten?to the core.

Final Word

The Child Geeks had a blast playing the game, but there were also some hurt feelings. The game allows one or more players to gang up on their opponents. This happened a number of times to the player who was clearly in the lead. Of course, once they were ganged up on, they stopped collecting tomatoes and fell behind. Once the player was no longer in the lead, the other players backed off, targeting another player. This type of game play is not discouraged in the rules and the game mechanisms in place support this type of player ?take-that? kind of play. For those little geeks who had the emotional cooping skills to deal with the aggressive nature of the game, they just worked through it. For those who did not, their level of frustration was visible, and if they thought they were being picked on, they let people know!

The Parent Geeks very much enjoyed the game, but only when playing it with their families. Among their peer group, the game fell well short of being an ?adult game?. To be fair the game is designed for families and for younger players, so this is hardly a revelation. Still, it is important to note that the game play was well received, but the audience the game is being played with is important.

Gamer Geeks rather enjoyed the game, but ONLY when they played it with their family. Again, the game is not targeting the game elitists so their reaction and their lack of endorsement is not a surprise. The Gamer Geeks did think the game was well designed and the component quality was top-notch. In other words, they thought it was an excellent family game, but not even close to being a Gamer Geek?s game.

While my 3-year-old couldn?t play by himself, he was happy to help his older brother?and eat his tomatoes

Gamer Geeks, this is a fun game to play with your families. The game itself will not challenge you a great deal, but you will enjoy the different ways the cards can be used. Keeping cards in your hand is sometimes not needed as the player will want the game to end. This is especially true when a player builds up some protection early on from tomato eating animals and insects. When there is a sufficient level of tomatoes scored, you?ll want the game to end as quickly as possible. This is done by discarding all your cards and drawing 5 new ones each round. While this might sound like it breaks the game, the other players will easily be able to see what you have for points and recognize you are attempting to end the game quickly. That?s when they start to gang up on you and all those cards you discarded are suddenly important. A fun and well designed game, but clearly for families. Play it when you have a chance, but don?t expect to be ?wowed? by it.

Parent Geeks, your peer group very much enjoyed this game when played with families, but not when played only with your peers. Like the Gamer Geeks, you?ll find the game play and design to be excellent, but the depth of the game and?repetitive?nature makes it something more appropriate for family play with mixed age and skill groups versus just adults. The game requires and strengthens math and reading, but also memorization. The player will need to keep mental track of how many tomatoes they have in their basket or risk not scoring them. Non-gamers also had a wonderful time playing the game with their family and remarked how much fun it was to be able to influence other players and protect the tomatoes at the same time. The only complaint we heard from your peer group is the game length, which seemed a bit too short.

Child Geeks, this is a fun and potentially challenging game. If players do not take the time to harass other players, the game moves along at a pretty quick and predictable pace. But the real fun comes in when you start to mess with the other players? tomatoes. You?ll find that you spend as much time managing your own pile of red fuzzies as you do your opponents. This game does an excellent job of introducing you to card and resource management; two important skills you?ll need for games in the future. The only thing to look out for and be aware of is that players can do a lot of things to make your side of the game slow. Don?t take cards played against you as anything other than game play. DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY! And if you do feel like you are being picked on, speak up! Tell others how you are feeling and let them know the game is not fun for you. We bet you?ll find that the other players back off almost?immediately.

There were two issues that came up time and time again while playing this game. The first was the game length. There are no set rounds and players can quickly exhaust the deck to end the game. Some of our players disliked this?immensely, while others saw it as a viable game mechanism to victory. I am not convinced it is bad or good, but do acknowledge that a game can end well before any player is ready for it to be finished. This is especially true if one or more players have little to know tomatoes scored for points. The second is the chance players might feel ganged up on and highly frustrated because they are unable to collect tomatoes and score them. This did happen in several of our games, and in fact, mostly to me. Players love to gang up on Father Geek, for some reason. When I was targeted by more than one player per turn, I collected very few tomatoes to score and never won the game. Oddly enough, for a game that plays 2 to 5 players, I think the best number is only 2. When you and your opponent are going against each other, each turn has a much more interesting impact and the game is more?manageable? For every player you add, the level of chaos and ?take that? interaction increases. For those looking for a chaotic game, they?ll enjoy this. For those players who are not (especially?the younger little geeks who just want to collect tomatoes) more players means more opportunity to be targeted.

Other than that, I think the game is a fun one for the family. It?s light, but has enough player?interaction?and requires?enough thinking to make the game enjoyable, just not Gamer Geek enjoyable. It certainly kept me engaged and I very much liked how I could directly address negative cards, albeit only one at a time. If you are looking for a fun family game about farming that is easy to learn and can be challenging to play, then do make room in your collection for?The Big Fat?Tomato?Game.
