Former manager says Clemens adapted late in career

(AP) ? Roger Clemens lost something off his fastball in his 40s but still succeeded by pitching smarter, his former manager testified Thursday.

"He continued to have great success, but for different reasons," said defense witness Phil Garner, who managed Clemens with the Houston Astros from 2004-2006. "He didn't just overpower teams; he outsmarted teams ... He wasn't as domineering as he was earlier."

Clemens is on trial for allegedly lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids or human growth hormone. Defense lawyers are trying to demonstrate that Clemens used smarts and hard work ? not performance-enhancing drugs ? to post exceptional numbers at an age when most players are retired.

In Clemens' first year with Houston, in 2004, he won his seventh Cy Young Award and posted an excellent 2.98 earned run average, nearly a full run better than the previous season, though most pitchers making that switch from the American to National league improve their ERAs by some fraction of a run. In his second year with Houston, when Clemens turned 43, his ERA dropped even further, to an extraordinarily good 1.87.

Garner said that one way Clemens got smarter was by pitching around really good hitters, then going after weaker ones. Garner said the pitcher's speed dropped from 95-97 mph in his early 30s to 90-92 mph.

"There's no question he had aged," said Garner, who sometimes referred to the pitcher by his nickname, Rocket.

Supporting the defense contention that Clemens succeeded through hard work, Garner recalled seeing the pitcher at the ballpark in spring training at 7:30 a.m. Clemens worked out in a flak jacket with 60 pounds of weights, then went for a run, Garner said.

A couple of times, Garner shouted as he imitated Clemens' competitive outbursts.

"What is going on?!" Garner recalled Clemens yelling at himself as he paced back and forth at the end of the dugout. "Are you going to pitch tonight or are you not going to pitch tonight?! Are you going to get anybody out tonight?!"

On Wednesday, two catchers who were teammates of Clemens said he played with integrity and refused to cut corners, the opposite of the image painted by prosecutors of a man who cheated to gain an edge and then lied about it to Congress.

"I don't think he'd cheat," said former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien, who caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. O'Brien portrayed Clemens as such a stickler that he'd refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because he considered it cheating.

The other backstop was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher with the Jays in 1998. When Hardin said good afternoon, Fletcher replied, "How we doing?" and frequently called the lawyer by his first name.

He said Clemens was a "big strong man" who set the standard for work ethic.

"Did Roger Clemens ever cut corners?" Hardin asked.

"Cut corners?" he replied with a taken-aback look and a smile. "No."

He gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.

"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.

Fletcher said it was important to make sure that batters didn't steal signs, because "the whole integrity of the game is ruined if the hitter knows what's coming."

He also testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.

Fletcher drew more laughter when he said it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.

"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said, and Clemens chuckled again.

Clemens joined the Blue Jays at the age of 34 as a free agent after the Boston Red Sox did not re-sign him following the 1996 season. Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the twilight of his career, but Clemens won the Cy Young Award the two next seasons for the Blue Jays.

In that second season in Toronto, Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.

The defense says it will call McNamee's estranged wife, Eileen, to testify, but her lawyer said Thursday that he wanted to make sure that her previously granted immunity remains intact. That's because McNamee, during his testimony, may have implicated her in a number of areas, such as possible mail fraud. The government had at one point planned to call her as a witness, but decided not to for tactical reasons. Clemens' lawyers want her testimony to help them try to discredit McNamee's credibility. At U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's urging, Eileen McNamee's lawyer will meet with government prosecutors Friday to discuss the immunity issue.

Defense: Monsignor not liable for sins of church

(AP) ? Jurors are hearing closing arguments in a landmark priest-abuse case in Philadelphia.

Monsignor William Lynn is on trial for allegedly endangering children as secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004.

Prosecutors say pedophile Roman Catholic priests were shuffled from parish to parish.

In court on Thursday, Lynn's attorney said the weekslong trial has shown the jury the dark side of the church and the evil acts committed by rogue priests.

But lawyer Thomas Bergstrom says his client should not be held responsible for sins of the church. He says Lynn alone tried to document the abuse and have the cardinal address it.

The 61-year-old Lynn is the first U.S. church official charged over his handling of priest-abuse complaints. He faces up to 21 years in prison if convicted.

The Hidden Symptoms of Breast Cancer and How to Reduce It ...

By Cathy Halls

There are many abnormalities that a woman might experience having to do with her breasts, but often, many don?t think that it?s anything to worry about. Here?s what you need to know about weird, painful or scary developments.

1. Breast Shape
The first symptom to look out for is a change in the shape or size of your breast. If this happens, a woman could have a tumor that is growing deep inside of her breast tissue. Therefore, always be looking for changes. Face a mirror and move your arms around so that you can see different angles of your breasts. Also, pay attention to whether or not it suddenly feels tighter than it previously did.

2. Pain in the Armpit
When a woman has a lot of pain underneath her arm, a doctor should have a look at it. This is because this is the first place that breast cancer develops. Usually, a woman can check for these symptoms with their fingertips very carefully. If a woman finds a lump that seems to be hard, and it will not move, this could be a sign of breast cancer. Also, the tissue under a woman's arms could be very dense compared to the tissue under the other armpit.

3. Changes in Nipples
If a woman starts to notice changes in her nipple, she should be alarmed. Since a tumor can change the appearance of the nipple, this is a big sign. Your nipple can also become inverted or flatter than it normally would be, compared to the other nipple. Plus, the nipple may be a lot more sensitive than normal. The nipple could also have blood coming out of it - if this doesn?t alarm you, I don?t know what will.

4. Sore Breasts
The fourth major symptom is when a woman's breasts become very sore or red. In fact, the skin on a breast might be very hot and irritated when touched. This is often a sign that the woman has inflammatory breast cancer. It?s the only type of breast cancer that is going to cause a woman's breast to become red and sore at the touch. The skin of the breast could also get dimples, along with some purplish areas that look like bruises.

5. Upper Back Pain
Most of the time, back pain is going to happen way before any of the other symptoms of breast cancer appear. The pain usually occurs between the shoulder blades. A lot of times, a woman is going to mistake this upper back pain for a pulled ligament or just sore muscles. This is going to be especially true if you do a lot of exercise. Don?t be fooled, get it checked out!

Reducing Breast Cancer

Nothing can totally prevent breast cancer, but studies have suggested that there are a few things that a woman can do to reduce the chances of getting it. The first thing is to limit the amount of alcohol that she drinks on a daily basis. Also, control your weight. Make sure you get plenty of physical activity on a daily basis, and also, believe it or not, breast feed when you have a baby. Lastly, avoid any kind of hormone therapy.

URBANA A recent report conducted by the University of Illinois provides an economic snapshot of the current state of the livestock industry, giving the Illinois livestock industry data to back up their importance to the state. The data show the production sector of the industry contributing to more than 25,000 jobs and $3.5 billion to the state's economy. When combined with meat and dairy processing, the numbers are an even more impressive 99,000 jobs and $27 billion.

"The meat and dairy complex, which includes the livestock industry, is big, approaching 5 percent of the gross state product," said Peter Goldsmith, U of I agricultural and consumer economist in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. "That's a lot of employees, a lot of taxes, and much of its impact occurs in urban areas through industrial processing and food manufacturing where we don't have a lot of agricultural votes. So, strategically, the meat and dairy processing sector seems like a really good partner."

A copy of the 133-page report entitled The Economic Impact of Illinois's Livestock Industry is available to download at illinoislivestock.org. Click on the research tab. Goldsmith wrote the report along with Miao Wang, a doctoral student and research assistant in the college.

Goldsmith said that, for the most part, the trends were fairly consistent, except for pork.

"The expansion of pork is really a high note," he said. "Pork exports are quite strong because of our weak dollar and high-quality products. It's a really a bright spot nationally. There has been about 10 percent growth nationally since 2000 because of the success with international exports. Here in Illinois, pork had 5 percent growth. In terms of beef, we don't have big feedlots here to complement our cow-calf industry, so much of the new investment in beef packing occurs out West where cattle can be more efficiency fattened."

Goldsmith said one of the reasons for the report was to give the livestock industry legitimacy as an economic engine for the state and help livestock industry stakeholders have a better understanding of the industry.

"Dairy has seen new technologies emerge and new business models, such as large-scale dairy operations with 3,200 cows in a facility and more profitability," Goldsmith said. "We still struggle to site those large facilities here in Illinois even though business models have improved and nationally attracted a lot of capital investment. We have only one here in the state. It has been quite successful both in terms of profitability as well as being a good neighbor, a steward of the environment, and an important source of local tax revenue and jobs. Producers recently tried to site two other facilities and they failed." Goldsmith explained that the real growth in dairy demand is being met by the large facilities that aren't being built here in Illinois. "They're being built elsewhere."

Interestingly the majority of the livestock products utilized by Illinois's meat and dairy processing sector originate from outside the state.

"We need new ideas for how to move the needle to improve the policy environment for livestock. Investors only work with you if you grow. One opportunity is to develop a broader strategic process of working to improve Illinois's overall business climate. A healthy business environment for meat and dairy processors is good for the state's livestock producers." These new markets would reside close by, and Illinois producers would be well positioned to meet the demand.

The report indicated that Clinton County has the largest livestock production in the state, with $122 million in direct output and $169 million in total output. The industry in the county generates annual taxes of $13 million and total direct employment of 1,089 full time workers. The livestock industry in Jasper County generates the greatest share of the county's economic activity or 9.9 percent of all the personal income.

Public apathy over climate change unrelated to science literacy

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? Are members of the public divided about climate change because they don't understand the science behind it? If Americans knew more basic science and were more proficient in technical reasoning, would public consensus match scientific consensus?

A study just published online in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests that the answer to both questions is no. Indeed, as members of the public become more science literate and numerate, the study found, individuals belonging to opposing cultural groups become even more divided on the risks that climate change poses.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the study was conducted by researchers associated with the Cultural Cognition Project at Yale Law School and involved a nationally representative sample of 1500 U.S. adults.

"The aim of the study was to test two hypotheses," said Dan Kahan, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law and Professor of Psychology at Yale Law School and a member of the study team. "The first attributes political controversy over climate change to the public's limited ability to comprehend science, and the second, to opposing sets of cultural values. The findings supported the second hypothesis and not the first," he said.

"Cultural cognition" is the term used to describe the process by which individuals' group values shape their perceptions of societal risks. It refers to the unconscious tendency of people to fit evidence of risk to positions that predominate in groups to which they belong. The results of the study were consistent with previous studies that show that individuals with more egalitarian values disagree sharply with individuals who have more individualistic ones on the risks associated with nuclear power, gun possession, and the HPV vaccine for school girls.

In this study, researchers measured "science literacy" with test items developed by the National Science Foundation. They also measured their subjects' "numeracy" -- that is, their ability and disposition to understand quantitative information.

"In effect," Kahan said, "ordinary members of the public credit or dismiss scientific information on disputed issues based on whether the information strengthens or weakens their ties to others who share their values. At least among ordinary members of the public, individuals with higher science comprehension are even better at fitting the evidence to their group commitments."

Kahan said that the study supports no inferences about the reasoning of scientific experts in climate change.

Researcher Ellen Peters of Ohio State University said that people who are higher in numeracy and science literacy usually make better decisions in complex technical situations, but the study clearly casts doubt on the notion that the more you understand science and math, the better decisions you'll make in complex and technical situations. "What this study shows is that people with high science and math comprehension can think their way to conclusions that are better for them as individuals but are not necessarily better for society."

According to Kahan, the study suggests the need for science communication strategies that reflect a more sophisticated understanding of cultural values.

"More information can help solve the climate change conflict," Kahan said, "but that information has to do more than communicate the scientific evidence. It also has to create a climate of deliberations in which no group perceives that accepting any piece of evidence is akin to betrayal of their cultural group."

In addition to Dan Kahan and Ellen Peters, other study researchers were Maggie Wittlin of the Cultural Cognition Project, Paul Slovic of Decision Research, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette of the Cultural Cognition Project, Donald Braman of George Washington University, and Gregory Mandel of Temple University.

How To Have The Perfect Wedding Day

Wedding planning, when not handled correctly, can drain all the joy out of the days preceding your ceremony. Here are a variety of tips that are designed to get you what you need for your wedding.

If you have the time for it, do something fun and relaxing just for yourself on your wedding morning A great massage would be one way to make sure you feel your best on your wedding day.

As you seek out a dress, don't just think about the kind of dress you'd like to wear, also consider what sorts of dresses will flatter your body. If you are not very tall, steer clear of getting your dress altered, just go to the petite section. You will notice the difference and your guests will too!

Don't be fearful about letting other people help out with segments of planning your wedding. Your wedding is a major life event, so it's natural to want to be part of the entire process to make sure it goes right. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

Rent diamonds on your wedding day. These can help you look amazing on a budget. You will be able to choose between many different kinds of jewelery while sticking to your budget.

Big centerpieces are overpriced and overrated, often taking more from table conversation than they add to it. As an alternative, try selecting a simple but elegant centerpiece that isn't too large or overwhelming. You will then allow people to have a conversation without unnecessary distractions; this will bring your guests closer.

If you have ample time but a small budget, save some money by printing your wedding invitations yourself. You can purchase invitation kits for a small cost, much cheaper than ordering invitations, and they let you personalize everything on your cards from the color to the font and wording.

See if you can find a willing helper who can assist you with looking after your equipment and moving it when necessary. Your assistant can also be useful when it comes to group shots and rounding up all the required family members.

If you want your colorful wedding cake as the focal point of your reception, present it on a coordinating fabric tablecloth. Whether you choose patterns or solids, the fabric should add another dimension of visual interest and help to tie your wedding cake in with your wedding theme.

It is a good idea to hear the speeches of those who will be speaking at your wedding so you know that their comments will be appropriate. Many generations and people of differing viewpoints will attend your wedding, so your speech makers need to make their speeches geared to everyone and not just play to their own friends.

Take the time to carefully consider the most important aspect of the wedding, your future spouse. Absolutely do not make this life-changing decision in haste. Weigh everything you know about your loved one, and think about everything involved with living with this person forever.

Start a savings account that is intended just for your wedding expenses. Establishing a budget on paper and delegating how much to spend in each area will help you stick to the budget. If you're not ready to get married, start saving now, so you can use the money later.

A professional wedding consultant can make the planning of your wedding go more smoothly, as well as providing assistance on the big day itself. Weddings can sometimes be stressful when things do go wrong. If you have a professional, they can handle the little details and any emergencies that might come up. This will allow you, your spouse-to-be, your family and your guests to simply enjoy your special day.

Apply for a credit card that has a rewards program before paying for event services. Weddings can be expensive and having a card with miles and deals is vital. All of these charges add up quickly when paying for a wedding, allowing you to rack up some great rewards in the process.

Make certain to send an online itinerary to your guests with the events, so they know how they should schedule their day and which part they are looking to attend. Include relevant information about the rehearsal dinner, reception and so on, so that each person knows where to be.

Let your control issues go, and allow your friends and family to get involved in the planning of your wedding. It is natural to want to participate in all aspects of planning, especially since your wedding is such a personal affair. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

If you want to avoid allergies or the expense of floral arrangements, consider using potted plants to decorate your wedding space. You also have several choices for pot decorations. For example, two common pot options are ceramic pots and terracotta stoneware. You can also decorate the pots yourself by painting them, or dressing them up with ribbons. With the potted plants, you can either take them home for yourself, or you can go ahead and let guests take them home as wedding gifts.

One key consideration when setting up seating for your wedding meal is to avoid having an odd number of guests at any table. If you put people of the same age together at tables they will have more to talk about.

Divide your table settings evenly. Don't put an odd number of people at any table. Group people at tables by age so that common ground for conversations exists.

If you are planning an outdoor reception, make sure that your caterer is aware of this. Some foods are not suitable for an outdoor reception because they may not keep well or they may fly away in heavy wind gusts. You may consider using decorative covers for your dishes. If you feel a need to have cold drinks present, a mini refrigerator should work nicely.

Apply this advice for a well planned wedding that gives you enough time to relax and remember why you are getting married in the first place. Your wedding will be a day you will never forget, so make it what you want it to be.

Senator: Prostitution scandal wider than believed

FILE - In this Dec. 3, 2009 file photo, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington. Sullivan will testify for the first time Wednesday about the humiliating prostitution scandal in Colombia that tarnished his agency's image. But don't expect Congress to demand his walking papers. (AP Photo/Haraz N. Ghanbari, File)

(AP) ? Several small groups of Secret Service employees separately visited clubs, bars and brothels in Colombia prior to a visit by President Barack Obama last month and engaged in reckless, "morally repugnant" behavior, Sen. Susan Collins says.

She says the employees' actions during the stunning prostitution scandal could have provided a foreign intelligence service, drug cartels or other criminals with opportunities for blackmail or coercion that could have threatened the president's safety.

In remarks prepared for the first congressional hearing on the matter Wednesday, Collins, R-Maine, also challenged early assurances that the scandal in Colombia appeared to be an isolated incident. She noted that two participants were Secret Service supervisors ? one with 21 years of service and the other with 22 years ? and both were married. Their involvement "surely sends a message to the rank and file that this kind of activity is tolerated on the road," Collins said.

"This was not a one-time event," said Collins, the senior Republican on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. "The circumstances unfortunately suggest an issue of culture."

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the committee's chairman, said, "I want to hear what the Secret Service is doing to encourage people to report egregious behavior when they see it."

Wednesday's hearing was expected to expose new details in the scandal, which became public after a dispute over payment between a Secret Service agent and a prostitute at a Cartagena hotel on April 12. The Secret Service was in the coastal resort for a Latin American summit before Obama's arrival. Collins said several small groups of agency employees from two hotels went out separately to clubs, bars and brothels and they "all ended up in similar circumstances."

"Contrary to the conventional story line, this was not simply a single, organized group that went out for a night on the town together," Collins said.

Senators were expected to focus on whether the Secret Service permitted a culture in which such behavior was tolerated. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has testified previously that she would be surprised if there were other examples, but senators have been skeptical.

In his own prepared remarks, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan told senators the behavior in Colombia wasn't representative of the agency's nearly 7,000 employees.

"I can understand how the question could be asked," Sullivan said, calling his employees "among the most dedicated, hardest working, self-sacrificing employees within the federal government."

Sullivan also assured senators that Obama's security was never at risk. The officers implicated in the prostitution scandal could not have inadvertently disclosed sensitive security details because their confidential briefing about Obama's trip had not taken place.

"At the time the misconduct occurred, none of the individuals involved in the misconduct had received any specific protective information, sensitive security documents, firearms, radios or other security-related equipment in their hotel rooms," Sullivan said.

Sullivan has survived professionally so far based on his openness about what happened. Senators were not expected to ask for his resignation, and the acting inspector general for the Homeland Security Department, Charles K. Edwards, gave Sullivan high marks for integrity. Edwards, who estimated that the early stages of his own investigation would be finished before July 2, said the Secret Service "has been completely transparent and cooperative."

"The Secret Service's efforts to date in investigating its own employees should not be discounted," Edwards told senators. "It has done credible job of uncovering the facts and, where appropriate, it has taken swift and decisive action."

The White House on Tuesday reasserted its confidence in Sullivan. Obama "has great faith in the Secret Service, believes the director has done an excellent job," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "The director moved very quickly to have this matter investigated and took action very quickly as a result of that investigation."

A dozen Secret Service officers and supervisors and 12 other U.S. military personnel were implicated. Eight Secret Service employees, including the two supervisors, have lost their jobs. The Secret Service is moving to permanently revoke the security clearance for one other employee, and three others have been cleared of serious wrongdoing.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that four of the Secret Service employees have decided to fight their dismissals.

Prostitution is legal in Colombia, but Sullivan quickly issued new guidelines that made it clear that agents on assignment overseas are subject to U.S. laws.

Sullivan said he directed Secret Service inspectors to investigate reports of similar misconduct in San Salvador. After 28 interviews with hotel employees and managers, State Department officials and others, "no evidence was found to substantiate the allegations," Sullivan said.

This week the Drug Enforcement Administration said the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General was investigating possible misconduct by two or more agents in Colombia. Collins revealed that the case involved at least two DEA employees who entertained female masseuses in the Cartagena apartment of one of the DEA agents. The investigation is unrelated to the Secret Service scandal but is based on information provided to the DEA by the Secret Service.

Robot uses glue gun to make tools, hopes to ace Survival Skills 101

Looking through Engadget's annals of robotic achievements, we see droids juggling, dabbling in competitive sailing and even manning prisons. Cool as they are, those functions aren't going to mean a thing when Mr. Automaton is lost in the wilderness, damaged and without a helping human hand in sight. Researchers at ETH Zurich are working to change that scenario, as they're currently developing a "self-reconfigurable" device that packs a glue gun for creating the tools it needs on the fly. It might not be the quickest method -- as you'll see in the video below, making a glue cup takes a good hour -- but it's effective enough for transporting and pouring water. That's not to say that the prototype is ready to fend for itself; it built the cup, but only under human direction. The researchers' next step is adding in autonomous capabilities so the bots can repair things -- and even build other robots -- without being told to do so. A sea of self-regenerating droids? Sounds harmless to us.

Mladic taunts survivors at start of genocide trial

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic taunted Srebrenica survivors on Wednesday at the start of his trial for genocide, running his hand across his throat in a gesture of defiance to relatives of the worst massacre in Europe since World War Two.

Mladic, now 70, flashed a thumbs-up and clapped his hands as he entered the courtroom in The Hague, where he faces possible life imprisonment for allegedly leading the slaughter of 8,000 unarmed Muslim boys and men in Srebrenica in 1995.

In the packed public seating area, a mother of one of the Srebrenica victims whispered "vulture" several times as prosecutors opened their case.

Later, Mladic made eye contact with one of the Muslim women in the audience, running a hand across his throat, in a gesture that led Presiding judge Alphons Orie to hold a brief recess and order an end to "inappropriate interactions."

Wearing a dark suit and tie, he sat, spectacles in hand, listening intently and jotting notes as prosecutors made their opening remarks.

Prosecutor Dermot Groome said Mladic and other Bosnian Serbs had divided the territory of the former Yugoslavia along ethnic lines and implemented a common plan to exterminate non-Serbs.

"The prosecution will present evidence that will show beyond a reasonable doubt the hand of Mr. Mladic in each of these crimes," he said.

Two dozen mothers of victims of the Srebrenica massacre gathered outside the court, some holding signs, one of which read: "Mladic, the greatest murder of innocent people and children."

Kada Hotic, who lost her 29-year son, husband and two brothers, said she was worried Mladic might not live long enough for the verdict, like the late Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who died during his trial.

Mladic is the last of the main protagonists in the Balkan wars of the 1990s to go on trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

He is accused of orchestrating not only the week-long massacre in Srebrenica, at the time a U.N. "safe haven", but also the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 people were killed by snipers, machineguns and heavy artillery.

The list of charges stemming from his actions as the Serb military commander in the Bosnian war of 1992-95 ranges from genocide to murder, acts of terror and other crimes against humanity.

But Mladic, who was arrested last May after 16 years on the run, has dismissed the charges as "monstrous" and says he is too ill to stand trial. The court entered a "not guilty" plea on his behalf.

STRONG EMOTIONS

The case has stirred up deep emotions in the Balkans and Wednesday's proceedings were broadcast live on big screens in Sarajevo, where thousands died between 1992 and 1995.

"I hope that many of those who are disillusioned and believe that Mladic is a Serb hero will change their minds, and that the trial will demonstrate that he was just a criminal and a coward," Fikret Grabovica, president of the association of parents and children killed in the siege of Sarajevo, told Reuters.

"My father is gone and the agony continues for the victims," said Bosnian Muslim Sudbin Music, who represents a group of wartime prisoners.

"Even if Mladic lives until the verdict, it will bring only mild satisfaction for the victims of Srebrenica and hundreds of other places in the Serb Republic.

Mladic has been angry and defiant during pre-trial hearings, heckling the judge, shouting and interrupting the proceedings.

"The whole world knows who I am," he told a hearing last year. "I am General Ratko Mladic. I defended my people, my country ... now I am defending myself."

Mladic was in charge of the Bosnian Serb army when, over several days in July 1995, Serb fighters overran the Srebrenica enclave in eastern Bosnia, theoretically under the protection of Dutch U.N. peacekeepers.

Video footage shot at the time showed Mladic mingling with Muslim prisoners. Shortly afterwards, the men and boys were separated from the women, stripped of identification, and shot.

BULLDOZED INTO GRAVES

The dead were bulldozed into mass graves, then later dug up with excavators and hauled away in trucks to be better hidden from the world, in dozens of remote mass graves.

Prosecutors say Mladic was part of a "joint criminal enterprise to eliminate the Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica by killing the men and boys ... and forcibly removing the women, young children and some elderly men".

Mladic is also held responsible for the siege and bombardment of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, which prosecutors said was intended to "spread terror among the civilian population".

The horrors of the siege, together with the Srebrenica massacre, eventually galvanized world opinion in support of the campaign of Western air strikes on Bosnian Serb targets that brought the conflict to an end shortly after.

Mladic was indicted in 1995 along with Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serbs' political leader.

Yet both remained free in Serbia for more than a decade before being tracked down and sent to The Hague. Karadzic's trial is already under way.

Defense lawyers say they have not had have enough time to review the huge case file prepared by prosecutors and asked for the trial to be postponed, but the request was denied.

Serge Brammertz, the court's chief prosecutor, has dismissed Mladic's assertion that he is too frail to sit through a 200-hour prosecution case involving testimony from 411 witnesses.

His appearance in The Hague is testament to the work of the tribunal, which has defied skeptics by managing, in the course of 19 years, to arrest all its 161 indictees.

But some victims still fear that Mladic, who has received physical therapy for a possible stroke, could escape judgment by dying in mid-trial.

Mladic's mentor, former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, the architect of the Balkan wars, died in detention in 2006, a few months before a verdict in his trial for genocide and other war crimes in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Intel launches new Ivy Bridge Xeons, targets microservers

Intel launches new Ivy Bridge Xeons, targets microservers

Intel is pushing out that delicious Ivy Bridge update to server chips and, interestingly, it's not focusing purely on the high end to start. In total, 28 new Xeon CPUs were introduced today, including the E5-4600 and 2400 families targeted at four and two socket systems, respectively. Those tweaked mainstream processors aren't the interesting part, though. We're more intigued by the updated E3 series, the low-end offerings that are aimed small businesses and light web-hosting duty. In particular the new E3-1220L v2 slashes power consumption to an impressive 17w by going with just two cores and only 3MB of cache. While that 3W advantage over its predecessor may not sound like much, it can make a huge difference in the microserver market and in high-density environments where cooling a room full of servers can become problematic. Even in its stripped down form the extremely low-power processor still supports Turbo Boost, Trusted Execution Technology and PCI-Express 3.0. Considering that last-gen's Atom-based server chip pulled down 15W, we'd consider the 1220L v2 an impressive feat of engineering. Now we've just gotta hope that Intel can carry through on that promised 6W Centerton chip. Check out the PR after the break.
