State Police arrest driver in crash that killed 70-year-old motorcyclist ...

Louisiana State Police arrested Robert Morris, 51, in connection with a two-vehicle crash that killed 70-year-old Elmus Welch shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday on La.? Highway 38 approximately one mile east of the St. Helena/Tangipahoa parish line. A preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Morris was traveling eastbound on La. 38 in a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle and ran off road.

Morris, in an attempt to regain control, overcorrected the steering to the left, causing the pickup truck to rotate counterclockwise, re-enter the highway and cross into the westbound lane where it crashed into a 2012 Can-Am motorcycle being driven by Welch.

Welch was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office. Welch was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Morris, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite with minor injuries. Troopers said they suspect Morris might have been impaired and booked him into the Tangipahoa Parish jail on charges of careless operation and vehicular homicide.

Toxicology analysis for both drivers will be conducted at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Both men are from Kentwood.
