WENTWORTH Shire Council and the George Gordon Oval User Group at Dareton have teamed together to establish a new $200,000 multi-use facility on-site.

Established in 2008, the user group comprises representatives of Wentworth District Football Netball Club, Coomealla/Wentworth Cricket Club, Dareton Primary School, the wider community and Wentworth Shire Council.

The group was established to prepare a master plan for the George Gordon Oval Recreation Reserve.

About 400 senior and junior participants from sporting groups across the Wentworth Shire regularly use the oval and its facilities.

The user group identified the development priority as a multi-use facility providing change room facilities for netball and cricket teams, as well as an umpires? change-rooms, and a storage component for the cricket club.

The Wentworth Shire Council applied for financial support for the project under the NSW Government Sport and Recreation scheme but was unsuccessful.

However, the user group and the Shire were both keen to see the project go ahead and raised the money locally. The eventual contributors were the Coomealla Memorial Spotting Club ? $87,500; Wentworth and District Community Bank Branch ? $30,000; Wentworth and District Football Netball Club ? $25,000; and Coomealla Wentworth Cricket Club ? $5000.

Stage Two of the proposed George Gordon Oval upgrade will see tower lighting installed ? funded by Wentworth Shire Council ? and an additional $87,500 provided by the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club.

The upgraded lighting will assist with football training, and the desire of the Wentworth Shire Council and Wentworth District Football Netball Club to host night football games in the future.

George Gordon Oval User Group spokesman, Andrew Murdoch, acknowledged the continued support of Council, the Club, the community bank, and the wider community in achieving ?a great result for sports in our area.?

The official opening of the $200,000 Multi User Facility is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, July 13)? at 1.45pm, proceeding the Wentworth Football Netball Club home game against South Mildura.
